The Crucible Abigail Williams Character Analysis Essay

Abigail Williams is a deranged character throughout the play. Towards the end she gets even worse. It all starts out because she’s in love with John Proctor from whom she had an affair with. She does everything she does to try to get John to be with her. One night when Tituba and the other girls went out in the woods to dance around a fire Abby brought a chicken. She drank the chicken’s blood and sacrificed it into the fire in hope that Elizabeth proctor would die. When Betty wouldn’t wake up from her sleep while John came to visit her, so then Abby tried to make her move with him. John stated that he didn’t want her no more towards Abby. Once the town starts to talk of witchcraft Abby blames Tituba for the whole thing. She explains that Tituba made all the girls go out into the woods and dance. Abby will do anything to keep herself out of the blame. Once the accusations start Abby gains power of the other girls. As Abby gains more power she learns what she can do and knows everyone will believe what she says. She then accuses Elizabeth
Proctor of witchcraft. Abby saw Marry Warren making a doll and placed a pin in the side of the doll. Abby then went to the extreme of stabbing herself in the side with a knife and going to the court. She told them that Elizabeth Proctor stabbed her through the doll. They then searched Elizabeth’s home and found the doll Abby told them about. Once Marry Warren told John that Abby saw her making the doll he tried to get Marry to confess to the court about what happen. Marry wouldn’t do it in fear of what Abby might do to her. John later told Marry he would kill her if she didn’t confess. Marry finally went to the court to confess and Abby turned the girls on her and made it look like Marry did witchcraft. Later Marry got scared and confessed about John saying he would kill her if she didn’t confess. After Abigail’s change she’s gone so crazy she doesn’t know what to do.
Once John gets questioned he says “Gods Dead” and the court arrest him. Of course Abby gets scared and does something stupid. Abby accuses Reverend Hale’s wife of witchcraft. The court then catches on about her lying. Abby then steals 31 pounds from Reverend Paris and tries to get John to leave town with her. She tells john that she can pay to guard to let him go and them two can leave. Abbey says she loves John and the only reason she did the whole thing was to get him to be with her. John then says “We will meet again but it will be in hell.” Then Abby leaves town. Abigail’s most human moment was when she asked John to leave town with her and she confesses about how the only reason she did all this was for him to be with her. I can relate to this because once you get in a bad situation you tend to not know what to do and will do anything to get out of
it.
