The Crucible By Arthur Miller: Play Analysis

"For every good reason there is to lie, there is a better reason to tell the truth" (Bo Bennett). Arthur Miller once wrote a play that had a scandalous lie called, "The Crucible." A crucible can be a metal container where other substances may be melted or subjected to be very temperatures. It also can be a situation of severe test or trials. The play relates so much to the title because a crucible separates the good from the bad when pressure is applied, and due to that there was a trial going on in the characters lives that was a life or death situation. Characters in the play changed as individuals based on religion, fear, acceptance. Reverend Parris was the pastor of Salem, Massachusets. Salem is a religious town. Reverend has one daughter named Betty and a niece named Abigail. This morning reverend found a group of girls in the was doing some ungodly cavorting. Later today, Betty was considered sick because she would not wake up. He asked Abigail what really happened this morning, Abigail lied and that caused him to be stressed. He was worried more about his reputation than his own child. The town assumed that the devil has got into Betty, which made them think that it was witchcraft. He had the worse battle with himself about his affair. Mr. Proctor was well-known and a good man. He got concerned when the trial was going on because he thought his secret was going to get out. He even manipulated Mary to lie to kill Abigail so the truth would not be told. Mary folded and went against what he said and started telling the truth.
