Destruction by decision
In the crucible (1953), the author, Arthur Miller demonstrates how the bitterness of others can ruin an entire town. During the witch trials in Salem, the condemned were only given two choices; they could give up the names of others who were possessed with the "evil spirit" or they would be hung. In Salem, there were many cases where many were accused just because of a grudge. Are people that hateful, they use personal grudges to their advantages?
Throughout the crucible, the characters grudges caused the hysteria in Salem, to be blown out of proportion.
Young Abigail Williams used her hatred towards Goody proctor, the wife of john proctor, to make a scheme to have john all to herself. Once Elizabeth found out about the affair her husband had with Abigail, she kicked her out. Since then, Abigail believes that Elizabeth is out to ruin her. When John came to town, she tried talking to him but he said that he loved
his wife and would not touch Abigail again. She then got mad and started to say that Goody proctor was blackening her name. Abigail stabbed herself and accused Elizabeth. If Elizabeth is charged and hung, that means she's out of the picture and can have Proctor to herself. Elizabeth stated to John “She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this” (Miller 166)
Paris's selfishness ways always caused problems between Proctor and himself. Paris is very greedy, and only cares about himself and his money. Proctor doesn't attend the church anymore because of Paris's teaching. Proctor told hale, "But Parris came,and for twenty week he preach nothin' but golden candlesticks until he had them" (Miller 168). Parris's tries to show that he has more authority than everyone else. He also shows off to Proctor, that he's always going to be better than him. Parris is yelling at John "The salary is sixty-six pound, Mr. Proctor! .. I am a graduate of Harvard College" (Miller 148). Parris only cares about himself and doesn't realize that all the showing him off makes him less liked.
People's greediness leads to actions that could have been prevented.
Putman only cared about his land, that he used his daughter to put blame on other landowners so he could buy them up. Danforth brought the accusation up to put man "He states that you coldly prompted your daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacobs that is now in jail" (Miller 182). If someone was accused and hung, their land would be put up for grabs. Pitman was having his daughter accuse people for his own advantage. Giles Corey backed up his accusation "If Jacobs hangs for witch he forfeit up his property-That's the law! .. This man is killing his neighbors for their land! (Miller 182-183) He is killing people to gain land. Putman encourage his daughter to faulty accuse and keep the trials going.
The hatred amongst others can truly reflect your honesty. The grudges in the crucible is what truly caused the trials to continue and was the driving force of hysteria. Without it, Salem witch trial may have never happened, because there would have been no one to
accuse.
