I disagree with this quote because Finny and Gene are great friends and i think that even after something bad happens they will forgive each other and become friends again like after the accident where Gene and Finny are on a branch Gene jounced the branch and Finny fell and now he can’t do any sports, but Finny still trusts Gene and this proves that even after Gene did something bad to Finny, FInny still trusts Gene even though what happened to Finny will really impact his life.

I think Finny and Gene are still really good friends and Finny believes that Gene did not jounce the branch on purpose so after being

When Brinker is asking questions about what happened at the tree, the “competitive look left [Phineas’] face” (169) as he realized the conversation they were having. Even though Finny claims to have not known that he was pushed it is clear that he was in denial because Gene had tried to tell him several times before that he was responsible. Both Finny and Gene then mix up the details of the story to save each other for different reasons: Gene from being guilty of injuring Finny and Finny from the psychological effects of his best friend intentionally hurting him. The unhealthy competition among the friends finally escapes them when Gene admits that it “was just some ignorance inside me… something blind” (191) that causes Gene to push Finny out of the tree; it was no longer the want to get rid of the competition that he so intensely believed before. Phineas’ acceptance of Gene’s apology emphasizes how they left behind their competition for something that was worth more to them: their…

Gene hopes to find satisfaction in the misfortune of Finny. The anticipation of an incident occurring allows Gene to carry on. “This time he wasn’t going to get away with it. I could feel myself becoming unexpectedly excited at that” (Knowles 27). Gene finds Finny to be perfect, he wants to prove a point that Finny has flaws and makes mistakes and there is no exception. Like a detective thrilled to reveal the murderer, Finny is exhilarated to uncover the true face of Finny. Furthermore, Gene’s aspirations for a misfortune to happen to Finny grow stronger as days pass by. Gene and Finny decide to jump into the river together and once they were on the limb, Gene takes a step forward and jounces on the limb causing Finny to fall with a loud thud to Gene’s astonishment. “It was the first clumsy physical action I had ever seen him make, with unthinking sureness I moved out on the limb and moved out on the limb and jumped into the river, every trace of my fear had forgotten” (Knowles 60). Gene subconsciously hopes that Finny will fall however he does not expect Finny to not have fast enough reflexes to avoid the incident. Gene’s feelings of vulnerability grew to the extent where it was considered overwhelming. One’s feeling can ultimately become powerful enough to lose control of their…

In the Crucible, there are many examples of selfishness. In the end there are very few people who fought for the truth and what was best for everyone before themselves. Most people cared solely about having a good reputation and not who they were stepping on to get there. Two main culprits of this are Thomas Putnam, a greedy property thief, and Abigail Williams, a liar and adulterer.…

As statedpreviously, this caused him to act out of his normal character. As for my own experiences, I have had many relations based on rivalry in athletics, family, and friendships. In athletics, a teammate and i would compete with each other for certainspots or positions. Our friendship was built on rivalry and competing with each other. With mysiblings, everything seems to be a contest. Challenging each other not even for a reward, simplyfor “bragging-rights”. Friendships have also had rivalry incorporated as well. Friends couldcompete with one another in different hobbies or activities they both enjoy. When Finny reveals to Gene that he is his best friend, it shows that Finny is bold. Asstated in the novel “there are very few relationships...not based on rivalry”(p. 37) at Devon.Finny revealing to Gene that he is his best friend helps form Finny’s innocent, pure character tothe reader. Gene does not know this though. He thinks that Finny is trying to get in his mind tobecome be better than Gene. I do believe relationships, in general, have some sort of rivalryincorporated based on all that was…

Several leading characters in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible exhibit qualities of pride and arrogance. Hale and Danforth, two men of considerable authority, convey Miller’s message, and criticism of pride. These two characters show that pride does not shine light on the truth, but rather turns just judgment away from it. Their pride ultimately dictates the decisions of the Salem witch trials, which leads to the deaths of hundreds of innocents.…

In a society that demands conformity individuals always suffer. Individuals dying not having happiness and lying is a massive reason as to why individuals are always suffering. In the year of wonders the plague is the main reason why everyone suffers. There’s really no happiness around as individuals have to focus more on surviving the plague rather than their own happiness and well-being. There are many examples during years of wonders where this is quite evident. From “The memories of happiness are fleeting things, reflections in a stream, glimpsed all broken for a second and then swept away in the current of grief that is our life now.” (1.1.13) to “Do we not have suffering enough in this village? Is there not Death enough here for you all that you bring the crime of murder amongst us as well?” (2.5.50) to “It seemed as if the flesh inside of him was dying while he yet breathed, the putrefying meat pushing and bursting its way out of his failing body.” (2.5.17) it is quite evident that this town suffers and it really all leads to the current events happening and the things that people are going through. In the crucible having happiness is also a task, there are a few different reasons as to why however, it’s more to do with people’s actions that causes all this and eventually also results in death.…
