Abigail's envy of Elizabeth and John Proctor's relationship continuously drove the conflict throughout the play, The Crucible written by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller depicts Abigail's love driven jealousy as a major scandal, perhaps in its entirety leading to the dramatization of these Salem witch trials.
Although Abigail had already taken part in an affair with John Proctor, the betrayal of his wife was not enough for her. As the controversial names were brought up during the witch trial accusations, it was slowly becoming more and more questionable as to what could truly be believable, although because the court had already charged multiple people, sentencing them to their death, they had to follow any lead they got, as they did not want to be seen as weak or foolish. As the court began a further question process on the new additions to their list of possible people to be hung, it left Abigail with a perfect reason to slip Elizabeth's name onto the table, as she would not have needed any exact proof. In act II of the Crucible Elizabeth says “She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this.” (1207). By the end of the play, Abigail had managed to have both Proctor and Elizabeth being continuously placed on trial, as the judges waited for their confessions. These circumstances finally allowed Proctor to see the truth in what he thought he wanted for his future. Abigail's hope to live out the rest of her life with Proctor by her side, by getting rid of Elizabeth as she was pregnant and would not be executed; instead she only created the effects of the witch trials the set Proctor on a path towards his death, as he would not confess something he didn't do as Proctor refused to give into Abigail's games anymore.
The impact of the theme love driven jealousy was spread throughout this play creating a more interesting story line for readers as they can build a more personal connection with each of the characters, whether it was between John and Elizabeth, John and Abigail or Elizabeth and Abigail, each leading to something much more than simply the feeling of
