Tonight, as you know, I have been asked to talk about why I believe that The Crucible should be part of the Queensland Senior English curriculum.
Tonight, I shall discuss how Arthur Miller beautifully created a world mirroring the moral complexities that we face in our day to day lives both on an individual and social level.
Firstly, The Crucible is a powerful educational tool which reflects the moral ambiguities of the individual.

As observers of this community, we watch as hysteria obscures all sense of rationality within Salem, tearing the town apart as friends, neighbours and family members falsely accuse one another of committing such absurd and unbelievable crimes as communing with the devil and killing unborn babies.
Throughout the play, we watch as dishonest yet powerful figures exploit this hysteria for their own selfish advantages.
I refer to such examples as Abigail Williams, whose obsession with John Proctor causes her to abuse those less powerful than she; Reverend Parris, who tries to heighten his status within the community by making scapegoats of people like Proctor who question his authority; and the Putnams, who, because of their greed, use their own daughter to accuse those who stand in their way.
This is something that we must alert our children of so that they can learn about our society as well as the world around them. We need to tell them the truth and show them the true corruption in the world, and what better time to do this than in senior school.
In summary, The Crucible must be taught in all Senior Schools around
