The play “The Crucible” dramatizes the destruction of a community by mass hysteria caused by members of the community accusing one another of practicing witch craft and devil worship. The play is based on events which took place in the puritan town of Salem Massachusetts in 1692, when a group of young girls were caught dancing naked in the forest by reveren paris the girls banded together and in their own defense used already apparent fears of witchcraft and the devil within the community as a mechanism to cause mass hysteria within the town leading to numerous town court proceedings causing villagers to accuse …show more content…
innocents of consorting with the devil which acted as a smoke screen to quash the accusations against the girls themselves and was also used to fuel their self interest and greed The ringleader of the girls was abigial and she was determined to use her power of not belonging to the community to court the man she desired, Procoter, who was caught up her web of lies leading to his destruction..
There Are particular scenes of the play which furthered my insights into the concepts of belonging. The concept of self belonging is represented by john proctor, Unlike most villagers in the community he in his own way remained a christian man but he belonged to himself rather then the rest of the over zealous religious community. John proctor in the end made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve his integrity in defense of his wife. After he himself was accused of dealings with the devil, he was a given a chance to admit to the false accusations but instead chose to die rather then sign his name to lies. “leave me my name a join with rebecca on the gallows” This quotation gave me a major insight in belonging to self because we need to understand who we are in the world so that we can choose where we best fit and john proctor understood that he was a husband a father and not a devil worshiper so he saw more important to die rather then tarnishes name proving the notions of self belonging My first related text is a movie “the bra boy’s” this text compliments the Crucible in gaining my insights into the concept of the belonging to community and also the power of belonging to something.
In the crucible they theme of survival is expressed through the need of belonging to community to survive this is the same in the bra boy’s town of maroubrah they grew up among poverty and violence and formed a strong belonging nature to survive”We Knew at that stage by sticking together it would be the only way that we could get through it” this is the same as the crucible because the ones who stongly belonged to the community where the ones that survived which gave me an insight into the power that comes with
belonging
The Close community in the brah boys is known as a surf tribe. The definition of a surf tribe is a group of surfers united by the ties of community customs and tradition, I believe that his definition is identical to the definition of a 16th century putrian Christian society, the close similarities of puritan societ and modern surf tribe gave me an insight inot how times have not changed the the power of belong still is important today.
The crucible also gives Another tool for expressing concepts of self belonging in stage directions “Proctors chest heaves and his eyes stare as he tears up the paper confessing to witchcraft he weeps in fury” Proctors tearing up of the paper highlights how concerned about his name and his reputation. His sense of self belonging to himself and standing up for what he believes in, the Stage direction emphasizes his will to belong to himself.
My second related text is song called found which also gave me an insight into the concept of self belonging “see iv searched the corners of this earth and this is what iv found no matter where I go I carry where im from”. This taught me that although he goes to deifferent places with different culters he carries his home he is is own man and he belongs to himself.
