The Crucible vs the Lord of the Flies
Base on their circumstances, Abigail from The Crucible and Ralph from Lord of the Flies wear masks to conceal their true identities and to fit into their societies for their own benefits. But Ralph wears his mask just to fit into society, whereas Abigail wears hers to save herself from the harsh circumstances.
For Abigail, she pretends to be a good child in front of people even though people in her village believe her as the one of wicked. In order to pretend as a nice girl, she conceals facts and tells people lies. Day after Abigail’s uncle Parris sees Abigail and her friends dancing in the forest, he says, “Now tell me true, Abigail. … Whatever abomination you have done, give me all of it now, for I dare not be taken unaware when I go before them down there”(pg.) Abigail says, “There is nothin’ more. I swear it, uncle” then he responds, “our name in the town–it is entirely white, is it not? Abigail says, “Why, I am sure it is, sir. There be no blush about my name”. Abigail lies to Parris to keep herself as a nice kid and she wants to confirm into society to save herself. When John Proctor pretends his adultery relationship with Abigail lies in the court to take revenge. Abigail wears the mask to take a revenge on John Proctor about love that he doesn’t care anymore. In the same way Ralph wear the masks like Abigail but he wear the mask just to fit into little community for his own benefits. After Simon dies, Ralph joins into Jack’s group which they usually go to hunt to survive and for their own fun, even though Ralph does not like hunting he follows with Jack’s group. “Jack challenges Ralph to join the hunt, and Ralph finally agrees to go simply to regain his position in the eyes of the group” (112). Ralph’s decision to join the group is to protect himself and to conform into society with others, also he wants to get rescue from the island not to death. His way of reaching the main purpose is different but the main purpose of fitting into society is same. In
