The Cultural Impacts of Tourism on the Host Communities
On the other hand large hotel chain restaurants often import food to satisfy foreign visitors and rarely employ local staff for senior management positions, preventing local farmers and workers from reaping the benefit of their presence.

Tourism has the power to affect cultural change. Successful development of a resource can lead to numerous negative impacts. Among these are overdevelopment, assimilation, conflict, and artificial reconstruction. While presenting a culture to tourists may help preserve the culture, it can also dilute or even destroy it. The point is to promote tourism in the region so that it would both give incomes and create respect for the local tradition and culture.

There are also both negative and positive impacts of tourism on the local ecology. Tourism often grows into mass-tourism. It leads to the over consumption, pollution, and lack of resources.
However, from the ecological point of view tourism is often more acceptable and preferable than any other industrial production, as it is environmentally friendlier. The problem is that it is not easy to change the traditional way of life of the local communities. It often creates pseudo conflicts.
Undoubtedly in some regions or countries the alternative industries are even more harmful to the environment than tourism.

Besides that in many countries of Asia and the Pacific, for example in Cook
Islands, Samoa and others, tourism is the main source of income or the friendliest to the environment. It is at least better than chopping down the forests or destroying coral

Eco-tourism is defined as being responsible when travelling to natural areas that protect and conserve the environment, helping to raise the well-being of the locals living there. Eco-tourism is an excellent alternative to the negative impacts of mass tourism as it lets visitors appreciate the scenery of an area, or discover and understand a local culture, and at the same time it also protects the locals and let them reap benefits. Generally, eco-tourism helps to minimise the impacts made by mass tourism as the volume of waste, pollution will be greatly reduced because mass tourism uses up these natural resources such as water, energy, food and destroys natural habitats. Consumption of these resources also puts huge amount of pressure on the local supplies. Hence therefore eco-tourism will help lessen these impacts and be a more feasible alternative to the negative impacts of mass tourism.…

Many researchers have examined social cultural impacts of cultural tourism in different destinations with the help of tourism related models. Alhasanat (2008) cited that social cultural impacts are divided into three categories: positive consequences, negative consequences and no real social impacts. For instance, a previous study in Latvia found out the locals there noticed the positive consequences in a friendly and trusty way. In contrary, a study in Botswana found out opposite findings, which shows negative consequences such as increasing prostitution rates and extra use of alcohol by residents. Besides, a study in Hawaii found that the locals did not notice any specific impacts of tourism. However, these previous researches create some areas for improvement. First, most of them conducted research through the locals’ perception but fail to reflect the visitors’ perception on their experience in the cultural villages. Second, the results obtained from a global measure by using tourism theory models would not be always applicable when focus on one particular destination.…

Tourism is one of the world 's largest industries and has a multitude of impacts, both positive and negative, on people 's lives and on the environment (1). For society to continue developing in the way it has done in the past, it is important to pay more attention to our environment. How this is best achieved is often a matter of opinion rather than fact, dependent upon different perspectives of the environment and views of nature. Recently, a concept has emerged that has attempted to bring together the best aspects of these different viewpoints, and to harmonise the development of mankind with the protection of nature. This is the concept of "Sustainable Development" (2). One of the most common understandings of this concept is that it involves maintaining our current rate of development whilst still leaving a suitable quantity and quality of resources behind for later generations to continue to develop. As one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy, tourism has a key contribution to make to sustainable development. For many countries tourism is an industry of great economic significance and is seen as a main instrument for regional development, as it stimulates new economic activities (Amedeo Fossati et al., 2000: 9). When it is broken down, it is generally agreed that tourism has a positive economic impact on the balance of payments, on employment, and on gross income and production. However, it is then vital to acknowledge the negative effects, namely on the environment. Problems in this area must be tackled by considering their relationship with the state of the economy and the…
