Specifically, Charlotte Perkins Gilman called for social change regarding mental health practices on women. Gilman’s significant use of autobiographical experiences made a deep impact on readers. In fact, the “rest cure” Gilman discusses in the story was an actual technique used to treat her depression. Gilman, in her response as to why she wrote the story, states “This wise man… applied the rest cure… and sent me home with solemn advice to "live as domestic a life as far as possible," to "have but two hours' intellectual life a day” (804). In her story, she illustrates how this treatment frustrated the main character, Jane. Jane talks about writing in her journal, stating “I don't know why I should write this. And I know John would think…

    The Legacy of Healing

In this text by Keith Gilyard, “A Legacy of Healing: Words, African American, and Power,” is a text that shows how African Americans and the names that we were called and given in back then [and now] are just a prime example of every race. Also it shows that when someone speaks or says something intimidating, it may give that person power but most of the time it’s just the word that does that to someone. The word Nigger is still used today and is “one of the most potent words used today,” according to Gilyard and I believe it is. Rumors run big and are a huge role in power hungry people, for example there a rumors going around stating that there is an ingredient in fast-food chicken that sterilizes Black males. When people here this they will most likely believe it and a huge uprising will start about businesses that sell chicken. Another big one is that the Reebok sneakers were distributed in South Africa to teach and to help them learn how to survive. In a way this is believable and in his text Gilyard goes on to explain why he and his wife fell into this rumor and believed it was real. This society creates rumors that start statewide debates, in which shows that Words and Language can pertain a huge amount of power if used correctly.…

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (b. 3 July 1860) was the ultimate role model for generations of feminists because of all of her amazing accomplishments. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, Gilman was the dominant women American sociologist, novelist, and poet. Her most famous piece, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” was published in 1892. In this work, Gilman describes the struggles women had to deal with because of the roles that men had given to them. The story is about a woman suffering from mental illness whom is kept in a closeted room by her husband because of her health. The protagonist must listen to her husband whom is also the doctor even though his treatment is contrasting to what she truly needs. The treatment is called “Rest Cure” and the main point of it is to isolate the women with complete rest and forced feeding. Gilman believed that “Rest Cure” was truly ineffective, and the protagonist actually just needed mental stimulation and the freedom to not be confined to this small room.…

Suicide has been defined as "the act of self-destruction by a person sound in mind and capable of measuring his (or her) moral responsibility" (Webster 1705). Determining one's moral responsibility is what all of humanity struggles with and strives to achieve. Many forces act toward the suppression of this self-discovery, causing a breakdown and ultimately a complete collapse of conventional conceptions of the self. So then the question presented becomes whether or not suicide is an act of tragic affirmation or pathetic defeat. Which argument is more strongly supported by evidence found in Kate Chopin's late 19th century novella The Awakening? Most analyses of the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, explain the newly emerged awareness and struggle against the societal forces that repress her. However, they ignore the weaknesses in Edna that prevented her from achieving the personal autonomy that she glimpsed during her periods of "awakening". Kate Chopin chooses to have Edna take a "final swim" as evidence of her absolute defeat as an insightful study of the limitations that prevent any woman from achieving the ultimate goal of self-actualization. Simply put, Edna's awakening leads to her suicide. Newly aware of the meanings her life could take on, the awakened part of herself presents Edna with a command to take action. When Edna is unable to rationalize her old and new selves, she surrenders her life to the sea as an escape from domestic compliance and solitary freedom.…
