Tom Benecke, the main character of Jack Finney’s Contents of a Dead Man’s Pocket, experiences many life events that change his priorities, such as realizing no one was going to help him off the ledge, breaking the glass to his apartment window, and when the yellow sheet flies out the window for a second time. Benecke went out on the ledge to retrieve his yellow sheet, but once he took his first few steps he found that it was not as easy or inviting as he originally assumed. Once Benecke made this realization he quickly modified his priority from job success to pure survival. The author writes, “He was simply not going to cling here till he slipped and fell; he told himself that now.” (47) Likewise, when Benecke recognized that the only way to get back inside was to break the window, he became torn on whether or not to risk the possibility of not fully breaking the glass and falling…
Carlson killing Candy’s dog leaves Candy wishing he’d done it himself, whereas when George killed Lennie, he isn’t left with guilt. “Look Candy…This ol’ dog jus’ suffers himself all the time. If you was to take him out and shoot him right in the back of the head – right there – why’d he’d never know what hit him.”() Carlson made it obvious that he wanted to kill Candy’s dog but that the dog wouldn’t suffer. Wanting the best for his dog, Candy allows Carlson to kill him. Later regretting his decision, Candy wishes he would have done it himself. Since George sees the pain and suffering Candy goes through after he expresses that he “oughtta shot that dog [himself]… shouldn’t oughtta of let no stranger shoot [his] dog” (), George takes matters into his own hands when the entire ranch is out to kill Lennie. George decides to be the one to kill Lennie because he didn’t want Lennie to suffer at the hands of Curley. Curley stated that he would shoot him if he found him and slim planned on locking Lennie up in a mental hospital if he found him alive. George had always looked out for Lennie and did what was best for him. Continuing to protect him, George made sure Lennie had no pain while killing him. He told Lennie to “think of the land and the rabbit,” then shot him right in the spine and neck to cause instantaneous, painless death. By killing Lennie himself, George isn’t left with guilt or regret. Both of these instances where Carlson kills Candy’s dog and George kills Lennie, supports the theme of loyalty and friendship. Carlson was looking out for Candy’s dog and didn’t want him to suffer any longer, so did a horrible act so that Candy didn’t have to. George knew that Lennie would continue to get into trouble and maybe hurt more people, so did what was best for him. If George had not killed Lennie, he knew someone else would in a more painful way. His entire life with Lennie, George protected him and did the same the day he killed…
him and never wants to disappoint him. George show that he is truly a best friend to Lennie…
Henri Frederic Amiel once stated, “Destiny has two ways of crushing us- by refusing our wishes and by fulfilling them.” In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, this is very true for George and Lennie. The pair has moved from ranch to ranch trying to keep down a job but Lennie who easily gets in trouble always thwarts them. They long to live the American Dream but they, like all the other workers, will never reach their dream that seems to be just beyond their fingertips. George watches over Lennie as they travel together but he cannot stop the mess that Lennie will get into at the newest ranch. Steinbeck conveys through the symbolism of playing cards, light, and Lennie’s hands that we are destined to play the hand fate deals us even if our hopes and dreams are dashed in the process of our destiny.…

How does Steinbeck use details in this passage to present the bunkhouse and its inhabitants?…
In this classic novella, which established him as one of the world’s most celebrated writers, John Steinbeck tells the story of two friends in 1930’s California. John Steinbeck wrote a naturalistic novel that dealt with three powerful and universal themes, imperative in the latter success of the novel. These themes were the value of dreams and goals, hopes and friendship. The novel also illustrates the importance of moral responsibility, and veracity of social injustice. His book Of Mice and Men is a story of two men living during the Great Depression in California. This is a book of defeated hope and the harsh reality of the “American Dream.” Steinbeck’s naturalistic and unrefined style of writing is helpful because of its ability to connect with his readers. The three strong themes in the novel are important because they depict human life in an interesting way, which can be understood. Of Mice and Men is a universal story because people everywhere can relate to the dreams, pleasures, and struggles of the characters.…
Garry Sinise’s realistic filmic interpretation of John Steinbeck Nobel Prize winning novella Of Mice and Men chooses to add and remove scenes to emphasize particular themes. He uses cinema graphic techniques to replace the objective third person narrator but maintains the dialogue to effectively confront the responder with Steinbeck’s concern relating to the need for companionship and understanding. Sinise uses imagery development in the novel to explore friendship, loneliness, and sacrifice in the context of the 1930’s rural California during the Great Depression.…
.The novel Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck. In Soledad, California during the Great Depression in the 1930's two men of the one named George and the other named Lennie were men who travel around working at ranches. George is the small, quick-witted one, and Lennie is the big, slow, dumb and extremely strong one. They have a dream, to have a little place all to themselves, without anyone bothering them. Their dreams are shattered though, when Lennie, who doesn't know his own strength, gets in trouble. In the pursuit of love, happiness and the American dream, man becomes a victim of his own circumstances and discovers that the good life becomes impossible for humanity to obtain and contains many flaws. Lennie and George represents Cain and Able a biblical story who were two brothers searching for their elusive dream. In the story of Cane and Abel ,Cane was to take care of Able .Both brothers were to prepare and offering to God to receive His blessing. When God came to look upon that offering God asked Cane were is Abel .In curiosity and furiousness Cane asked God" Am I my brothers keeper?" Just like in the story of Cane and Abel ,George is Lennies keeper ,George is consistently watching over Lennie no matter where they go .In the story of Cane and Abel,Cane was furious with God because God had asked of his brother .Cane prepared his offering just for the fact of the knowledge that he was to receive blessings in return. Those who are more able should take care of those who are not able to complete tasks in life. But in order in being capabable of doing that one must have patience and faith in that matters and struggles that a person has to go throught with one other. In similarity George was at guidance for Lennie at the main fact because he had a pitty upon Lennie and a guilty conscious . He stayed by Lennies side and expectations which was to live the normal "American Lifew"Having their own piece of…

The nostalgia of the photographs hung on his worn walls, were constant memories of his cheerful past, when Benjamin actually cared. ‘But now, now, he left in an instant.’ The wizened man’s words served to console the dreadful experiences of the past minutes. Here in this room, holding a photo frame tightly, he should have felt honoured and proud, yet his eyes simply could not smile. He shifted uncomfortably and evasively, looked away, lost in contemplation, thinking of the jubilant birthdays of his son, however he was continually…
In the United States Criminal Justice System, there is a category of defenses that may excuse an individual who has committed a criminal offense of responsibility for their actions. Insanity is one of these defense excuses, and it claims that the state of mind of the individual in question at the time of the transgression was insufficient so much so that they are not accountable for their actions. One of the various tests used to determine the defendant’s state of mind is called the M’Naghten rule. This rule states that at the time of the offense, the defendant either did not know that what he was doing was wrong, or was unable to distinguish between right and wrong, due to mental incapacitation. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, one of the main characters, Lennie Small, clearly commits the physical act of murder. The question that remains is whether or not Lenny had the mental stability at the time of the crime to be held legally responsible for his action.…
The decade of the 1930s was indeed a time of depression; desperation consumed people and they turned against each other, no longer looking out for anybody but oneself. Eventually this led people into loneliness. This is portrayed in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The idea of having someone gives you a purpose, a feeble grasp on reality. This concept weaves through the novel, making the reader recognize that companionship, no matter in what form, is essential to one’s being. Curley’s wife, Crooks, Lennie and George are the main outcasts of the novel and represent how solitude ruins you. For one reason or another, life has left Crooks and Curley’s wife bitter and resentful, in desperate need of friendship. On the other hand, George and Lennie, however dysfunctional their relationship may be, have a strong tie to one another. In a secluded ranch, during the Great Depression, one is in great need of amity.…
Thomas Hobbes in his Leviathan states that, "in the state of nature mans life is nasty, brutish and short". In depression era America, no greater truth could be said. There were millions unemployed, largely unskilled and living on the margins of society. The lowest of the low were the migrant labourers travelling from place to place trying to scratch a living. They often had to travel illegally by freight car with all its consequent dangers. Their life expectancy was low, crime was rampant and despair was a fellow traveller. This is the setting of John Steinbeck 's, Of Mice and Men '.…
