I was not able to find an existing film with the exact colour palette I wanted, and I did not wish to create a colour palette for our film based solely on someone's else's work. The result is that I have found four films, listed in the filmography, that have a similar visual style to what I wish to achieve, and which extensively use at least two of the colours in my colour palette.
The overall colour cast of the film will be warm yellow because it is a love story with a (somewhat) happy ending.
The Maid of Honour, Lerato, is in a state of detachment at the start of the story. Her dress will be pale blue to emphasize that she feels detached and repressed. (Bellantoni, 2005:86) The …show more content…
Steven Spielberg). This film has been referenced for its use of soft colours, particularly yellows and purples and natural lighting.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (dir. David Fincher). This film has been referenced for its use of warm lighting in many scenes. David Fincher switches between very yellow and very blue colour casts between scenes, so much so that critics have said he only sees the world in those two colours. This film was also referenced for its use of desaturation in later scenes, although the technique was implemented for a different reason to mine.
The Piano (dir. Jane Campion). This film was referenced for its use of purple and blue in selective scenes, particularly in the shadows and on tactile surfaces such as clothing and wood.
Children of Men (dir. Alfonso Cuaron). My favourite film of all time, Children of Men uses a drastically contrasted colour palette between the outside, dystopian world and the comfortable, innocent interiors of trusted spaces. I wish to implement that same warm-to-cold contrast between the shots of Palesa and Lerato and the shot/s of Thato.
