They undertake the feeling of being calm and secure with the world around them. Other factors such as the death of someone close or failing in social areas, begin to contribute to this. This leaves them trying to be completely separate from the public. And this is how Christopher John Francis Boone lives his life. If you compare this to ordinary people , you would most likely find that they dislike the idea of being so seclusive. For me personally, I could not get into a small space and think for hours. I would consider this activity, abnormal since I do not do it frequently. However, Christopher does not think of it this way. He considers it as training to become an astronaut in which he wants to be. Astronauts are always in tight spaces and far away from home. This itself would make Christopher a lot more divergent than most of the population. As Christopher wrote the book,"Who Killed Wellington?", he learned secrets not only about someone else, but within him as well. He encouraged himself to do what is right for him. A prime example of Christopher's neurodiversity would be his trust issues, shown when his father admits that his mother is not actually dead but left him when he was a young boy due to his neurodiversity due to his mother not being able to handle the way he reacts. Christopher's response to this is to pass out and vomit on himself. Not only does Christopher do this, but he also runs to the next train station to live with his mother, whom he hasn't seen in years, let alone knew she was still alive until a couple hours ago, which really shows the betrayal Christopher felt from his father. As well, Christopher explicitly told his mother that he did not want to see his father anymore because he was afraid of his violent behaviour and that he would hurt him. Chapter 167, p. 122 “I had to get out of the house”.…

Because of his mental disability, he's not very good at having conversations and doesn't feel comfortable around people and has trouble understanding social cues. He also hates it when people touch or grab him, which leads to him getting arrested for hitting a police officer: "I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him." He struggles in social scenarios and cannot read emotions, but flourishes in theoretical areas (such as mathematics). His social isolation is emphasised in his first person narration. “They are lies about things which didn’t happen and they make me feel shaky and scared.” He cannot cope with ‘normal’ social situations and is dislocated from society. This alienation drastically impacts the decisions he makes throughout the novel, and impacts his relationships. “…and it was dark in there and there was no one in there with me …and I did some quadratic equations like 0=437x + 103x + 11.” Christopher’s use of equations allow him to forget about his social struggles, and allow him to detach himself from reality. He functions in his own unique and logical world. This social solitude and Christopher’s unique condition greatly impacts the personal choices made throughout the novel, and the ramifications of these on…

Interestingly, achieval of this job would mean complete freedom for Christopher, as he would no longer be under the control of his father. But in this "freeing" career, he would be in a "tiny spacecraft". To the majority of people, this would be a negative aspect of being an astronaut. However, for Christopher it is one of the principal attractions he has to the job; he "likes little spaces." Consequently, this contrast between the liberation and confinement of the spacecraft suggests that for Christopher freedom requires enclosure. Similarly in space travel without a person being constrained in a spacecraft, there is no possibility of exploration or growth. This distancing of an astronaut and earth, is similar to the future separation of Christopher and his family, which is achieved only with the aid of Christopher's coping method of physical confinement. Furthermore, as the novel progresses Christopher eventually faces, at least on a small scale, independence, when he runs away from his father. Before he is even able to leave his own backyard Christopher is overwhelmed and "squeeze[s] into the gap between the wall of the shed and the…

When we think about heroes, Superman, Batman and other stereotypical heroes usually come to mind, but perhaps it’s the people that the public eye might consider “flawed” that bring this concept of bravery and courage into perspective. In Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher is a most unexpected example of a hero. Although he may seem like an ordinary, 15-year-old boy, somewhat limited by autism, Christopher, in his own unique way, brings a new meaning to the word “hero”. Christopher shows the characteristics of a hero through his determination, and his ability to overcome his dependence on routines and certainties. This ability to conquer over his “disability” puts him above the common stereotypical hero.…
