Personal, Academic, Civic engagement
There are a few skills and competencies that I have developed and accomplished after starting the entrepreneurial work term. From the business aspect of this work term, I have learned marketing skills, business validation skills, and the ability to transform a project idea
into a profitable business. From the technical aspect of the work term, I have become an expert due to more experience in the mobile application development and the User Experience design. Firstly, I have learned the procedure to quickly validate my idea. I have created a minimum viable product to test the public engagement, such as creating a simple web page, Facebook group/page, and using different media platforms, Facebook advertising campaign, Facebook post, and Google search adwords to promote my ideas. Secondly, I have strong technical skills in website and desktop application development before I start my work term which helps me in the process of the application development. These skills and experience from this work term are very important and valuable to my future as a student and as a professional. Without the entrepreneurial work term, I will not learn these business skills just from taking Computer Science courses or have the knowledge on how to run a company or business. Moreover, the technical skills that I build extremely valuable for my future as a professional because it expands my area of expertise and helps me gain precious working experience for my future career.
By doing this work term, I have learned to develop mobile applications on multiple platforms like IOS and Android operating system. Furthermore, I have learned to use different programs to do application prototype and mock-up, it gives me a better idea for what the application will look like at the end of the development. I understand that being an expert in these areas will require one to put in lots of time and may experience a few failures, but I am willing to take the challenge and progress towards my goal to fulfill on learning those skills.
The biggest success in my entrepreneurial work term is to learn how to become an entrepreneur and develop an application distributes to the public. I am obsessed with our idea and application that we have been working on ever since our idea is approved by Program Cataiyt, Daan. A few months of hard working with my team, we have transformed an idea into an actual product that can be widely used by everyone and learn more about different trails. The application is currently in the final testing phase, and we plan to release it on Apple App Store around the middle of August before the end of tourist season in Newfoundland. The main reason why I choose to become an entrepreneur is that I always want to have a company of my own one day, and the entrepreneurship is the greatest opportunity for me now. I believe I can build and develop the platform based on our creative idea, and with the help of weekly mentorship and supervision, my dream can come true. I also enjoy that I am not bound to a nine to five office hour job, so I can plan my own work of the day.
The most disappointing thing about my entrepreneurial work term is a lack of business selling skills among three of us. This is my biggest challenge to date because if either one of us comprehends the process of market validation and selling product, then the others can completely focus on the application development. Therefore, we may be able to release the product sooner. However, because neither one of us have any experiences, so we need to learn how to effectively validate the market and sell it to our potential customers to keep the company running.
