The Dark Phoenix Saga is an extension of the storyline of the X-Men and it focuses on the phoenix force and Jean Grey. The saga refers to Jean’s corruption and fall. When Jean returned from a space mission, she attains the ultimate potential as a telekinetic and a telepath. She becomes incredibly powerful, but she still decides to voluntarily restrain the power so as to keep herself under control. Most American superhero comics heavily reference it and consider it a classic.

As Mastermind tries to prove himself in order to join the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle, Jean’s vast power becomes his target. Mastermind impersonates Jason Wyngarde and starts to seduce the naïve Jean. With the help of Emma Frost’s mind-tap device, Mastermind projects illusions into Jeans mind.
