After, the Great Sea Spirit will take her under, completing the ritual and keeping life upon the island alive and protected for another 15 years. It was time to walk. She bowed to the elders, then to her parents, then, she turned around again to face the sea. Cove stepped out, placing one foot in front of the other again and again until the water was at her neck. She knew that whatever happened now was only for the good of her people. Cove wasn’t expecting to wake up on top of a rock in the middle of the ocean, her mind foggy and her heart heavy. She looked around, unable to spot any land in the distance when suddenly, she heard a soft voice calling her. “Oh Island Child, I have laid witness to what your people have done in my name for many years, each time I accept it and continue to protect it. But this year, this time, it’s

“Surrrr-sure.” Evelyn slurred stumbling once more. Sebastian lifted her up like she was a feather and pulled her close to him; his white t-shirt smelled of eucalyptus and lavender, the scent soothed her. She struggles against the ripping force of the ocean current. Her arms are quickly tiring from swimming against it. She relaxes, letting her muscles fall limp. Within seconds, she is pushed out to sea. The people on the beach are so small, little tiny ants against a white sand backdrop. The tall condo skyscrapers are now tiny Lego buildings. The kids hollering and music blasting on the beach is faded like a distant memory. She will die out here, she’s sure of it. Her daughter won’t have a mother’s hand to hold when learning to walk. Her husband will be left a widower, forever broken by the loss of his love. She closes her eyes and accepts her fate as she drifts further out to sea. The guttural voice of the engine consumed my ears as we pulled out from the dock. My grandma and I sat in silence until we reached the first hot spot. As the sun ascended higher into the sky, we soaked up its heat and watched as the ocean soared by. The boat gave way to the current, we baited our lines, and at the captain’s command, we cast into the sea. The crisp salty air filled my lungs as I patiently bobbed my rod.…

Johnny’s father picked up the grey, oversized anorak sprawled across the dusty floorboards and threw it at Johnny’s feet. He then grabbed several packed rucksacks, walked outside with them swung over his broad shoulders and dumped them in the back of his muddy pick-up truck. Johnny crept to the door to watch his father load the truck for their weekend away, exploring the Arafura Sea. The truck door jolted open and his father jumped inside. SLAM the door shut and the window rolled down, “Get in”. Johnny responded to his father with a loud groan, he hurried to the truck and they drove off. He couldn’t imagine anything worse than a weekend outdoors. After an hour of travelling without making the slightest glint of eye contact with each other, the truck finally came to a Holt. They had arrived at the dock, ready to aboard the crystal blue Arafura Sea.…
