The Day I Came To America
Divine Anozie Common App Essay I remembered I was 4 years old flying a plane to a place I have never seen before. I touched down in a dry, humid place with little to no green trees, but all the people there looked like me. Living in America has always made me wonder what life back home was like and I got the chance when I was about 4. If only I could remember most of the things I experienced. At the time I was living in your average suburban neighborhood but I never forgot where I came from. My parents are both Nigerian immigrants and came to America for a better life and stronger opportunities for me. I always loved America and all the things I benefited from …show more content…
Well I got the chance to go back home in 2013 and this experience changed my life. My plane landed and I was eager to see Nigeria again. We got a taxi and left the airport. I went from seeing all paved roads to all dirt roads. The roads were bad but the traffic was even worse. My family and I would spend at least three hours to get to my uncles house. It should’ve only taken about 30 minutes but nobody follows the traffic signs which leads to traffic hold up. I honestly only saw two traffic lights and when traffic got so bad people got out of their cars and directed the traffic themselves! I found it crazy how easy it was to get from A to B in America versus doing so in Nigeria. We reached my uncle’s house and on the way there I noticed the poorer villages where the kids took showers outside and probably had no running water, compared to me back home. Even though there are many poor people, there are still families that have nice homes and electricity. They aren’t living in straw huts with lions, which is a common stereotype in America. We then visited my aunt on my mom’s side and she lived in a pretty nice house. We stayed there for a while but I always noticed a peculiar smell. There was a man burning

Once we arrived to Illinois we went by 26st. There my father was waiting for us outside with my cousins and aunt. The first thing I did was reach for my father. Our first few weeks in Chicago were a bit lunatic. By saying that the next day after we arrived my sister and I went to the store and a shoot broke out. My mom came into the store running to pick us up. I honestly was scared of my new home. Once school started I started to have a bit of comfort in the neighborhood. Once I went to school it hit me that I was not anymore in Mexico, for I saw a lot of diversity. From black to white, to brown people I saw and I meet. I only saw white people on TV who were another ethic than me. During kinder I learned to read, count, and learn a new language…

Leaving your country is always a difficult decision, and whoever has experienced it understands the sacrifice it entails. When I left Poland at 18, I thought I was going to be in paradise, but to my disappointment it was far from that. I had to learn a new language and work hard to provide for myself. What kept me motivated was the hope for a better future and an independent life.…

March 2nd of 2011 in Charlotte NC I just receive 2 phone calls. The first one was from my lawyer in Morganton notifying me that several indictments had come through. The other was from Detective South of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, telling me that I had no choice but to turn myself in. I remember him saying “If you run I will find you”. I thought about running from my troubles, but that isn’t a life that I wanted. The next day I took the long drive from Charlotte NC to Morganton NC knowing that I was going to jail for a long time. I turn myself in at the Magistrates office thinking that I will be showed some leniency, after all I was only 18 years old and it was the first time I had been in trouble. I thought wrong, I was given copies of my indictments and arrest warrants, given a 23,000 dollar bond and placed in Jail. I came to America about 13 years ago from Sri Lanka and I’ve had experiences in this country that I think are very unique. Both of my parents worked so hard to bring my brother and I to America, because they knew that if we wanted the best future we’d have to be here. I never truly realized the impact America has had on me and my family. I come from an Indian/Sri Lankan background and being able to see so much acceptance of our culture here is truly amazing. Although I have had experiences with racism here, I think these last 2 years have made a huge impact on diversity and truly accepting that everyone is equal.…

Coming to America as a four year old was very intriguing, but it is a blurr remembering the past of being in Nigeria. The only conclusion that was remembered is being in a different environment; an environment that was more civilized with cities and highways, which had a diverse amount of people who talked and acted differently from me and my family. I grew up living in a three bedroom, one story, house apartment, with eight people, which would be seen as very difficult and unusual, which it was, but the type of companionship and…

Before my arrival to the United States of America, I viewed this country’s values as a land of opportunity and the promotion of freedom. Upon my arrival to the US, my perspective has shifted and the reality became more obvious. Knowing the country's values and ideals increases your sense of knowledge. Americans endorse unity, praise the idea of family, and acknowledge the innovations created by these individuals. My families curiosities about this country spurred our move from The United Arab Emirates to United States of America.…

I grew up in Vietnam and accepted Vietnam education during my childhood. It was July 19, 2011 when my parents had the opportunity to come to America as immigrants. I have great appreciation for my grandparents and parents because they gave up everything to come to America. They did this to give their children a better life and education. I still remember the day that I left my country; it was a beautiful memory that I won’t ever forget. The plane took off at 5:00 am, so we had to arrive at the airport at 3:00 am. All of my family was there with us, we were hugging and crying. It took all my strength and courage to keep from crying that day; I had to control my feelings. I couldn’t cry because if I cried it would’ve been too hard to say goodbye. Finally, I couldn’t control my tears; they raced down…

The most difficult time is the period when I came to America. I was born in China and lived there for 20 years. The new environment for me was unfamiliar and challengeable. My English was poor and hard to understand, so that I was afraid to speak English to people. But if I want to stay here, I must solve this problem. Therefore, I went to the adult school to improve my oral English. During the idle time, I watched the CNN student news to broaden my horizon and to know more about America. Nowadays, my English has improved a lot, although I know that’s not enough. I still have a long way to go to achieve the standard that speak fluently. In addition, I also had a challenge in learning how to drive. Everyone knows that car is essential for our lives.…

The atmosphere at home didn’t feel right, I felt like if there was something going on and I was the only one that didn’t know. My mom and sister looked suspicious. My house was small, it had two bedrooms and one bathroom. My sister got on her blue BMX bike and went out, I didn’t know where she was going but she went faster than a missile.
