The Day I Lost Him
The Day I lost Him Do you ever look at your boyfriend/girlfriend, best friend, brother/sister, or anyone you love and wonder what would life be like without them? Or do you ever imagine that they would just be gone one day? I never think that way. I think that everyone is invincible and everyone is going to live forever. That is how it seems at least. That is definitely not the case. I guess you could call me an idealist, but in reality people that you see everyday could be gone tomorrow. That is why you should appreciate them in every way, every day. My boyfriend Jordan and I were home making chicken alfredo, one of my favorite dishes, when I heard a knock at the door. Who could possibly be at the door? No one ever visits me. I looked out the window and I see my mother's Yukon, so I thought it was my dad. He is the only person to ever “check” on me, so I opened the door and I saw my mother standing there. She stood there wearing her perfectly pressed , stainless work outfit and her hair curled to perfection. She looked tip-top like always, except I could tell something was wrong. Her mascara was a little runny and her eyes were red. The first thing that ran through my mind was that my uncle's (her brother) brain cancer was back. So, I let her in and I asked her what was wrong. She looked me in the eye with the face of extreme sadness and said, “Matt died.” I looked at her with a blank stare as she started to cry, I then asked, “ Matt who?” It couldn't possibly be my ex-boyfriend Matt, my high school sweetheart. We dated for almost three years and he was my first love. It must be her neighbor. His name was Matt, right? She holds her composure and then looked me in the eye and tried to get the courage to answer my question, but nothing came out and that was when I knew who it was. I then asked, “Reile?” I asked Reile, even though I already knew the answer. She shakes her head yes which made everything so much more real and immediately my mind started

It was Monday, May 30th, 2011. My family was driving home from a hotel we were staying at in Virginia, after going to Kings Dominion for my birthday day the day before. On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

Sadly, the tragic day came when I went to the nursing home and the CNA’s were outside to mom’s room. I asked “if they were getting ready to give her at bath or something?” They would not answer me, just then the nurse came out and told me that mom was gasping and that she could die at any time, so if I needed to call…

My mom has a brain tumor. She had it since 2004 and was able to get most of it surgically removed 4 years ago. But in those 11 years where she had it, I felt hopeless. She was my mom and I had to see her be in constant pain due to the seizures she would have. There was nothing I could do. The doctors in America said it was too dangerous to operate so she was forced to receive treatment in Taiwan. Because of it, I was always scared whenever I got a call from my dad. I was scared that he was calling because my mom had passed. I did not go out often because I was worried. Whenever we went on family trip, I had to be by my mom, in case a seizure were to…

Since I was a little kid she had been a constant in my life. Every holiday, every family reunion, every birthday, she would always be present. At family reunions, she would be engaged in conversation at the daily breakfasts and dinners, at every birthday party she would be there when the presents were opened and the cake was eaten. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, she would always bring her famous deviled eggs and would be playing with the children. Near the end she would almost always be asleep and covered in blankets on the couch, until her family needed her. But perhaps the strongest memory I have of her was only between us. Our family was visiting Stillwater for the day, for what reason I can’t remember. Being young at the time I was always excited to have a ride in my grandparents’ van, especially if she was there. We were sitting in the very back, and she was talking to me about something which I only now see the profoundness of: her own mortality. She told me she wanted to live to see me graduate high school, a dream which she wouldn’t live to see to fruition. In telling me this I realize now that she was confiding in me her fear of death, a fear which at the time I had no concept…

About a year ago, I came home from work one night and walked into the kitchen to where my mother was standing. There was a feeling of uneasiness and the panic began to clench my stomach. She looked so sad, so stressed; maybe it was the frizzy hair, the bags beneath her eyes, the way her back slouched in a low negative curve, or her eyes. Her eyes looked at me before she turned them away, but in that fragment of a second, it’s almost like I could look inside her narrow eyes and search until I would come upon this thing. This thing has no name, but it scares her. She wouldn’t exactly explain to me what it was but I felt the sudden movements of uncertainty with the way she shifted her body and tilted her gaze away from mine. It’s almost like I started to feel scared too.…

I was about eleven or twelve at the time. My mother called me into her bedroom. “Khalil, I have breast cancer,” she said. Bewildered, confused and emotionally wounded when she proclaimed that she might not be a part of my life anymore. The announcement of her terminal illness shocked and awed me to a point in which I could not wipe the tears from my face fast enough to see properly. However, this experience not only made me appreciate and value my mother’s existence more, but, it also made me look back at my grandmother’s value, whom was diagnosed with this plague as well. After my mother bared this horrible news, I could not look her in face without breaking down in tears. Without thinking, I quickly dashed towards my room to let my pillows absorb my unrelenting screams. As I calmed the raging storm spiraling in my mind, I soon returned to my mother’s room. When I returned I noticed her expression had not changed at all. As she continued to smile as if nothing went wrong in the world, I could not comprehend how she continued to stay calm and collected in this situation. In addition to being at fault, I…

The statements above are true for my life; my life was about to change forever. This is the day I found out my mother had only six months to live, I was only 19 years old. I was picking my mother up from a routine follow-up appointment she had at Keesler Air force Base Hospital in Biloxi Mississippi, on the afternoon of 3 March 1997. I was walking up the steps of the hospital when I saw her walking out her face was pale I asked her if she was ok, her response was no. At this point in time everything went silent she asked me to sit down on the steps but I couldn’t I just wanted to know what was wrong. My mother while holding my hands then told me the results of the test and that she had liver cancer and it was untreatable. I was frozen not knowing what to say I just grab her and held her close and begun to cry. She told me to stop crying because she was going to need me to be strong for her and my brothers, that she wanted her last six months to be happy memories not sad ones.…
