Summary: In Don Thompson’s article entitled “5 Dead, Including Gunman, in Series of North California Shootings” which was published November 14, 2017, it begins with the author defining the unfortunate occurrences of the multiple victims involved in a shooting in Red Bluff, California. It is clarified that the suspected shooter has been shooting “... Hundreds of rounds, large magazines,” a witness reported. Oddly enough, the shooter had also been reported for a domestic violence incident that most of his neighbors were “aware” about. Though the devastating occurrence was one that changed the lives of many Red Bluff citizens, there remains information that is still unknown to the public eye. As Thompson opens his article, he begins to summarize…

It is a well-known fact that President John F Kennedy was shot dead, assassinated in Dealey Plaza on the 22nd of November, 1963. What is still debated today however, is who killed Kennedy, and how many people were involved. One of the main contributing factors to this debate is the amount of potential forensic evidence destroyed, the question of how reliable some of the evidence is (, mainly eye-witness accounts), and the evidence that is yet to be released to the public (, why is it locked up, what light can it shed on the event?). Due to many problems surrounding the very evidence that historians, politicians and common people alike draw their opinions from, there can be no definitive conclusion as to whether JFK was killed by a lone gunman, or even who is ultimately responsible for his death. The evidence recovered on the assassination of JFK largely supports the theory of a lone gunman, the identity of this gunman however, is still hotly debated, but a significant portion of all evidence released to the public points to the lone gunman theory. The way this evidence supports the lone gunman theory is varied. Several eye witnesses claim…
On October 2nd, 2002, a shooting spree near the Nation’s Capital would begin with the killing of a 55-year-old man and last 23 days. By the next morning, the 911 call center in the area would become inundated with calls of shootings across Montgomery County, Maryland. By the end of the day, four people were shot and killed in Maryland, and another was killed in the District of Columbia (FBI, 2007). Law Enforcement needed to act quickly to figure out if the shootings were linked and if so, who the suspects were. Over the course of several weeks, many more individuals would be killed or injured by shootings at random. The randomness of the shootings led the public to enter a panic, fearful of not knowing who the next victim could be. Law enforcement also had a difficult time as there did not appear to be any specific reason as to why some were targeted and others were not. Once the shootings were linked, law enforcement quickly worked together including local, state, and federal authorities.…
The snipers had a strategic plan in shooting their victims. As appose to a random one day spree, they had a well thought out process of how to conduct this shooting. They…
The speculations made regarding the massacre taken place at a movie theatre in Aurora Colorado in 2012, are yet to be in the clear. In a night where the town people were out to enjoy the new release of “The Dark Knight Rises”, a person or a couple, decided to turn it into a deadly and unforgettable night for the moviegoers. The case of James Holmes, the suspect captured within minutes of the horrific event, left the nation with many questions unanswered and relatives of the victims devastated. An undeniable fact is that people believe that the government and the media were not completely transparent about the investigation and the shooting itself. As we can see in the documentary “The James Holmes Conspiracy”, the testimonies of those who witnessed the bloody crime were not supported by the town’s police department. There…
There were prominent warning signs even according to the shooter’s poetry professor Nikki Giovanni that caused her and her students fear to be around Cho (Roberts). When the first shooting occured campus authoritys gave no more thought into it other than it being a small domestic incident, leaving them to believe the gunman had left campus. A student Brant Martel felt that, “they were a little slow on their response.” (Questions…). Even a day after the shooting people like Kenneth Trump of National School and Safety Services acknowledge that there needed to be a plan implimented to deal with crisis situations like this one (Questions…). Students were disappointed of the lack of attention to the first shooting and the emails that were sent 2 hours later during the rest of the shootings (NBC). Since the shootings that happened in 2007, about two thirds of four year colleges with 2500 students have been supplied with dedicated police officers and security guards according to the Departmant of Justice (Rich). The Virginia Tech campus shootings changed the landscape of security on school campuses by forcing campuses to implement active shooter drills. text alerts for students,…
Throughout history we have witnessed gruesome murders and the serial killers behind them. Serial killers like Ted Bundy, the BTK killer, and one of New York’s own, and most memorable killers the .44 Caliber killer, also known as the “Son of Sam” killer. For over a year David Berkowitz, known as Son of Sam, was able to remain uncaught walking the streets committing these shootings wounding and murdering many people. The criminal investigation that was conducted to capture this violent serial killer was very complex and widely talked about because Berkowitz spread out his shootings over a course of a year and committed them every few months making it hard for police to find a trail to follow. This paper will discuss the early life of David Berkowitz giving us some insight on how and why he committed these crimes, an overview of the victims and why they were chosen, what investigative measures were used to track him down and lock him up, and also what happened to him after he was finally caught.…
S: This essay is in the form of a New York Times article from March 27, 1964 where an assailant, Winston Moseley; 29, stabbed Catherine “Kitty” Genovese, 28, three times within a thirty-five minute period early one morning. The brutal murder was seen by at least thirty-eight people in a heavily populated neighborhood, yet none of these witnesses called the police until Ms. Genovese had already died around 3:50am. When asked why they didn’t call the police earlier, none of the witnesses could come up with a definitive answer. The most frequent response was; “I didn’t want to get involved.” This case confused police due to the high level of apathy to violence, an attitude that has become more prevalent in American culture as time has passed.…
Problem Statement: The response to the shootings in Columbine could have been handled more effectively if there was a solid coordinate effort from law enforcement and emergency units in the area. The plan of action to prevent the incident from playing out further was hastily put together and only cost more lives at danger. All possible lines of communication whether it be from law enforcement officials, emergency personnel or even the media for that matter, were contradicting each other and inaccurate in their details. Information from witnesses, victims and Columbine school officials also proved to be unreliable in this terrorist act. Their accounts of what…
According to Moore, the shooting was effectively due to the media’s victimization of black males. Because of the victimization of black males, the media dramatically sparked fear into the American public, causing people to purchase guns for their safety. In this case, the media inhumanely singled out a group of people and exploited them for their best interests. This victimization is best described by Barry Glassner in a conversation with Moore when he says “If you turn on the TV, look at the news, what are you going to hear about? Dangerous black guys, right? Unnamed black guy who is accused of some crime. You’re going to see black guys doing bad things, or hear stories about black guys doing bad things. And we’ve heard this our whole lives” (Moore 2002). Interestingly, Glassner chose to use the word ‘unnamed’ in the context of a black male being accused of a crime. This implies that he believes the media is forging incidents to fill a political agenda. The political agenda, in this case, is helping the corporation Lockheed Martin gain support in their pro-gun campaign. Therefore, the people running the media are not humane because they don’t have sympathy for others; they victimize a group of people to fulfill their political…
Christine Freund, Virginia Voskerichian, Valentina Suriani, Alexander Esau, and Stacy Moskowitz all fell to the bullets of a .44 caliber round and sparked a statewide search of nearly over 300 officers for the newly introduced “.44 caliber killer”. The police were thumped when it came to these killings, there was no motive behind it, no reason to target these victims, but there were a couple things that stayed consistent. All of the victims who died besides Alexander Esau were young female women, all these killings were late at night, and all done by the same gun, the same caliber bullet. But something was extremely off, every eye witness account of the suspected gun man painted a different illustration of the man responsible for shooting and none closely resembled each other. With the public looking out for multiple people that have been illustrated in…
The odd part about this was that normally, during chaos like this, police guards’ first task would be to put up yellow restricting tapes to restrict citizens from stamping in into the crime scene yet the Dallas police didn’t do that and their way of investigating was also very unprofessional; having reporters gaining easy access to grounds and no proper cover-up when searching the…
Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Virginia Tech, all have something in common. When you hear these, you probably think “mass shooting.” You may even remember where you were when you heard the news, or, when you were told the story. Many people claim that guns are not the issue and mental issues are the only reason these tragedies occur. However, when you take an unstable person with psychological issues and combine that with a weapon, the outcome cannot be anything short from disastrous.…
The fallacy “Texas Sharpshooter” gets its name from imagining a cowboy shooting at a barn. Over time, one side of the barn that the cowboy continuously shoots at, becomes shattered with holes. In some places, there are many holes, in other places, there are few to none. If the cowboy later paints a bulls eye over a spot where his bullet holes clustered together, it would look like he’s pretty good with the gun. “The Texas sharpshooter fallacy is an informal fallacy in which pieces of information that have no relationship to one another are called out for their similarities, and that similarity is used for claiming the existence of a pattern.” The name comes from a joke about a Texan who fires some shots at the side of a barn, then paints a target centered on the biggest cluster of hits and claims to be a sharp shooter. The misconception of the Texas Sharpshooter is that you have to take randomness into account when determining cause and effect. The truth of the Texas Sharpshooter is that people will tend to ignore random chance when the results seem meaningful or when you want a random event to have a meaningful cause. One great example that I came across was the weird similarities to the presidents Lincoln and Kennedy. Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy were both presidents of the United States, elected 100 years apart. Both were shot and killed by assassins who were known by three names with 15 letters, John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, and neither killer would make it to trial. They were both killed on a Friday while sitting next to their wives, Lincoln in the Ford Theater, Kennedy in a Lincoln made by Ford. One example that I came up with was for example, say that I go on a date with a girl for the first time, knowing nothing about each other. After talking for awhile, we come to find out how much similarities we have. We come to find out that we drive the same kind of car, different color, but same year. We also come to…
