STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
What factors contribute to the deplorable road conditions in my community and how does this affect the lives of commuters?

REASON FOR SELECTING AREA OF RESEARCH
The main reasons why the researcher chooses this topic is because in the community of Islington it has been a prolonging issue with the deplorable road condition. It has drawn to the researcher concern because it is affecting the means of traveling and the health of persons residing in the community. Motor vehicle owners and taxi drivers undergo major difficulties due to the deplorable road conditions. Its costly being as they have to constantly repair their cars.
As it relates to time span, it takes a lot more times for traveling vehicle drivers has to drive at an extra slow speed to avoid encountering with too much damage on the road. Upon completing on this study, the researcher hopes to discover out the major causes of the deplorable road condition. It is also the researcher’s intention to find a solution to the major cause of the deplorable roads condition in Islington.

METHOD OF INVESTIGATION
In order to collect data from the survey the researcher have decided to use printed questionnaires.
Questionnaires as a method of collecting data have several advantages:
It take little time to be completed
It can be done at the persons convenience to have it completed
It requires confidentiality since respondents are not required to attach their named.
Documentary and observation are also use to collect data for this research. Questionnaire list of questions are written down and typed which is issued out to people to get their views on the particular topic.

PROCEDURES USE TO COLLECT DATA
This research was conducted to highlight the factors which are contributing to the deplorable road condition in Islington. The researcher decided to choose the deplorable road condition in Islington in St. Mary because it is the main problem that is affecting the area of study. The main objective of the researcher is not only to gather detailed information on the topic being studied. Just, has been gain knowledge about the different instruments and techniques of data collection, the researcher used printed questionnaire and documentary researches to gather this information e.g., (Books and the internet).
A total of twenty (20) questionnaires were issued to the residents of the Islington community to obtain the necessary information needed to make up the research. Twenty (20) questionnaires were distributed to the residents on November 21 2012 and all were retrieved back to the researcher on November 31 which was great.
The researcher also decided to use a sampling technique was used while issuing out the questionnaires, this is the stratified sampling. Of these respondents 40% were Male, 60%were Females, the population of Islington is huge approximately (1000) one thousand persons. It is impossible to give a questionnaire to each person so the researcher chose twenty (20) individuals which are about 4% of the population.
In aid of the documentary research the researcher visited the Ocho Rios Branch library in St. Mary where books were searched along with newspapers and internet as well. A substantial amount of data was collected on the topic. TALLY SHEET

PRSENTATION OF DATA COLLECTED 4. BAR CHART SHOWING THE CONDITION IN MY COMMUNITY The Bar graph above shows the condition of the road. Seventy percent (70%) of the respondents said that the roads are very deplorable. Twenty percent (20%) indicated that the roads are not so bad but needs improvement while the remaining ten percent (10%) indicated that the roads were fair.

The bar graph showing for how long the road has been in this state. According to the diagram above fifteen (15%) percent of the respondents stated that more than ten years, five (5%) percent stated that in recent times, thirty (30 %) percent said over a decade and the other (50%) respondents said that not sure.

The table above shows the major causes of the deplorable conditions of the road. Twenty (20%) of respondents said constant flooding of rain, eighty (80%) percentage of the respondents indicated poor road maintenance.

The bar graph shows how the poor road condition affected you. Thirty-five (35%) of the respondents said increase of fares because taxi driver n bus operators refuse to apply this route. Five (5%) percent also stated that when it rains heavily residents are unable to attend school/work and the remaining sixty (60%) stated that frequent damage to vehicles.

The pie chart depict how the poor road conditions lead to the under development. According to the pie chart above shows thirty (30%) of the respondents said residence lack access to or receive insufficient social services, twenty-five (25%) respondents said lack infrastructural development ,fifteen 15% percent said lack investments as the poor road condition deter businessman and the other twenty-five 25% percent said persons are moving out of the area.

Fifty-five (55%) percent of respondents said residence try to patch the road with marl or cement, Thirty-five (35%) percent of respondents hold meeting with MP and councilors about the problem, and the remaining ten (10%) percent chose all of the above.

13. THE PIE CHART SHOWING WHAT CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE THE STATE OF THE ROAD.

According to the pie chart above twenty (20%) percent of the respondents said they should conduct proper drains, five (5%) percent of the respondents stated that they should divert larger vehicles to a specific route and the remains of the respondents stated that seventy-five (75%) percent need regular maintenance of the road.
