The Deterioration of Music Retailers in Contemporary Society
In contemporary society, there is no longer a need for a physical retailer to purchase music. Companies that distribute music for consumer usage such as HMV, Walmart, etc., within the past were the central core of supply for record allocation ; however, technological advances have altered consumer purchasing conventions. Recently, there has been a transition of music being purchased from the traditional hard copy format to purchasing music in a digital layout from the web. The outdated system of purchasing music has been replaced by web based digital music, which is easier to access, more portable and gives consumers more purchasing control than the long-established hard copy album format found in conventional stores.

Innovative technology has allowed for the implementation of web based digital music, which allows for easier retrieval of music for consumers compared to the access of the physical hard copy. The accessibility of digital music allows for continuous consumption, this unique feature has expanded the approach to the business of music. This is because people can access web based digital music 24/7 and essentially can be done anywhere that has an internet connection. The consumer can purchase music anytime during the day for example, eating breakfast in their pyjamas to sitting outside on the deck. This gives purchasers alternate access to music on the basis of the retailer’s constraints. Stores run on certain hours of operation that does not include the late evening and nightly hours. Retailers are restricted to available hours of operation, which are dictated by labour, laws, salaries and market demand. As well, it does not always blend with the work or school schedules of everyone else. The perimeters surrounding the acquisition of music from a retail location, such as the hours of operation depict a foremost advantage of digital music. Most people are busy during the hours of store operation which can make it very difficult for them to go

Napster introduced a revolutionary change to the way music was distributed conventionally. Music companies worked with the artists to produce music. Thereafter they invested heavily into burning the music CD’s, marketing and advertising of the music and managing the distribution of the music to end customers via retailers. Retailers incurred staffing and real estate and costs. In contrast to this, Napster was able to bring together over 60 Million users who would share their collection of music to the remainder of the user base. In doing so, the reach and range of music distribution was significantly raised. Strong Community Feeling, word of mouth effect and High customer awareness led to low cost of marketing for Napster.…

In order to start our nostalgic record store off on the right foot, we need to consider purchasing information technology for the business. Information technology will help us track our inventory, payroll, sales, accept credit cards and keep track of customers. There are at least five different types of information systems we need to consider. These five systems are as follows (Rainer Jr. & Cegielski, 2011):…

CD sales were said to have dropped anywhere from 5% to 10% in 2001 and 2002. Critics of the recording industry all have something to say. Some critics claim that sales fell only slightly given the falling economy during that time period. They also claim that those who use free file sharing software are more likely to spend more on music than other music purchasers. Other critics point out statistics such as falling industry releases and higher than average CD price increases compared to other consumer prices (Laudon & Laudon, 2006). The music industry's efforts to switch illegal music downloaders to legal sites seem to be working. A recent press release by the RIAA claims that at mid-year 2005, CD releases were down 6.5%. The RIAA blames most of this decline on music piracy. The statistics in this press release lead me to believe that more of this decline may be contributable to legal online music sales and downloads. The first six months of 2005 compared to the same period in 2004 shows a 154% increase in legal digital sales of singles. According to an analysis by the NPD group, 29% of music obtained by listeners in 2004 was burned CDs. The growth of online music sales speaks for itself though. According to a June 2005 survey by Public Opinion Strategies, twice as many adults ages 18 to 54 paid to download music in 2005 than in…

After reviewing the consumer market drive for record store inventory, results have demonstrated the most effective method to liquidate the product inventory would be marketing. By streamlining an effective marketing campaign and a competitive edge strategy the company would have the ability to target specific audience within the context of the company’s products. With the multitude of genres that would be cataloged into inventory, marketing demographics would contribute to the localities, regions and venues in which the marketing campaign would be presented. Although this level of marketing efforts may appear to be complex and over budget. Information systems and technology have streamlined the process and paired cost effectiveness and efficiency into a user friendly simplistic process.…

The MoBank Group’s main objectives in producing HMV’s mobile strategy were to involve the broadest base of consumers possible, and offer them with a wide range of related and valuable services. Using Bowman’s clock [Appendices 1], HMV’s pricing strategy could be classified as broad differentiation. The CDs and DVDs HMV offer is expensive than its competitors such as Amazon2. HMV differentiates itself from the market through offering its consumers high-perceived value. By doing so HMV has to incur more cost, thus the price of its products are higher than others. Despite HMV offering expensive products, consumers are willing to pay for it. It is true as consumers spending for HMV’s products have increased by almost 50% compared to this time last year3. HMV is ‘last man standing’ in the high street entertainment market. Thus, HMV is the only music retailer which can create additional value through customer service and amusement to enhance the in-store experience. This is important for a differentiation strategy to be successful in future.…

Large music labels have made statements since the late 1990s regarding the Internet’s damage to music sales through piracy by showing the decline of CDs sold year over year. However, the music labels themselves did not realize the sales opportunities that could be provided by the Internet and only saw a damaging environment. The same music labels also neglected to take advantage of the Internet as a new venue to find popular music artists. As with all types of modernization, understanding takes time, and the music industry is beginning to come around by offering portions of their libraries for sale through sanctioned distributers like Amazon and iTunes as well as taking notice of new artists found through sites like YouTube. The Internet has helped the music industry by providing new methods of music distribution as well as a global arena for self-promotion by new artists.…

HSS technology is most applicable to songs targeted at the general mainstream music audience market. The estimated 2500 albums marketed to this audience accounted for retail sales of $75,000 (low) to $10.7 billion (high). Therefore, Polyphonic HMI must choose the market segment that has the largest share of this mainstream market. Three potential target markets were analyzed: record labels, producers and unsigned artists. Amongst these three potential target markets, the five major record companies account for 84% of the retail sales of the global music market, which is valued at $32 billion (“see Table A”). Analysis of the three segments based on size, growth, profitability and ease of access, identified that Polyphonic should target the five major record labels. Here, Polyphonic HMI had the greatest potential for market success and penetration1.…

Apple’s iTunes Music Store might adopt other strategies such as Product Bundle Pricing strategy to make a bundle of different songs (both popular and less popular tracks) and sell them at reduced prices. This will not only help the sales of the slow moving sound tracks, but also work as a revenue generator by way of alluring potential consumers. The bundling strategy will help in increasing profits by extracting additional consumer surplus. Another strategy that the company may adopt is the captive pricing policy. This approach will require the company to charge higher prices for the songs since they can only be…
