In the stories, the characters’ families and ol’ Scratch are very different. Tom Walker has no kids with a very poor looking house and not a very good relationship with his wife. The devil in his story is a dark native American dressed as a woodsman. Who cares for trees that represent people. While Jabez Stone has a nice house and farm with family and kids that love him. But his devil is a white man dressed all in black with pointy teeth who takes people in boxes and keeps them. When their deal is
over the main characters in the stories both try to make a deal with the devil because of greed and needing the other help with providing for his family due to bad luck.
Contrasting the main characters Tom Walker was poor and wanted his wife to die. He was also very greedy and cheap and had a contract with the devil for riches now in exchange for his soul. to all of his belongings turned to dust. While the other Jabez Stone just had bad luck and only had this. contract with the devil was for 10 years he, with help of Daniel Webster, took the devil to court and survived.
The settings are in the northeast but they aren’t the same. The opening to one is based in the woods and in a swampy location, while the other is in a farmland in a nice town. The times are very different Tom Walker was in the 1700s and Jabez Stone was more near the civil war around the 1800s.
So one should never make a deal with the devil no matter how bad a life gets. There is a chance someone might get lucky and have a Daniel Webster in his or her life but that is highly doubtful. Not only because it is wrong but also because the life you have on this earth isn’t forever while the life after is. It is just best to power through all the temptations of the world and all the sins. Also, these stories show that one would need, very good self-control, otherwise actions could put that person in a bad situation. No matter how good things are now they aren't worth giving your soul up for eternal life.
