The Diagnostic And Psychological Impact Of Abortion
The subject of abortion is a sensitive and filled with opinion, judgment and criticisms; however, there are times when a woman becomes pregnant where she will not want to go through with the pregnancy. This can be for any number of reasons, be it financial circumstances, maturity level, emotional stability, psychological state, who the father is or any personal reason a woman may make that choice. When a woman decides not to keep a child, she will often choose to have an abortion. Abortion is defined as “a medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus” (Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, n.d.). There are opposing views on whether or not going through the experience of having an abortion will cause a woman to experience adverse psychological effects and it can be …show more content…

Women who had to carry unwanted pregnancies had more negative outcomes with physical health and economic stability, such as their higher rates of hypertension, which is unusually high blood pressure and chronic pelvic pain, after the birth. Those women were also three times as likely to end up in poverty two years later, than women who had gotten the abortion they had wanted. Even though most of the women grow to love the child they had originally not wanted, five percent still feel that they would have rather had gone through with the abortion. A very complex and ongoing study has found no correlation between having symptoms of anxiety and depression, and with having an abortion, but those who did not get abortions did show more signs of anxiety over the next few months after being turned away by abortion centers. The children born from unwanted pregnancies had definite disadvantages. They were all slightly overweight, had lower grades with bad social skills, were less popular among other classmates and teachers, and even sometimes, their own mothers.…
