Speech is ability to express thoughts and emotions. Speech helps us to communicate with each other. So Communication (from Latin commūnicāre, meaning "to share") is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or more living creatures.
But do people speak (communicate) in the same way? So, the obvious answer is no. There’s a lot of difference in speaking – language difference, pronounce difference, difference of dialects and etc. But now I am going to describe such differences as “aged” and “gender”.
Fedya, 10 years old, pupil.
A -Hello, Fedya!
B – Hi.
A - How are you?
B - I am fine.
A - That’s nice. All right, Fedya, do you know what dream is?
B - Dream is something what a person dreams about…that he strive for this and wants it to come true.
A - Well, and do you have your own dream?
B - My dream…Mmm…Well…I want to have a flat to live there and work …mmm…as a bus driver.
A - Really? You want to be a bus driver?
B - Yes, to drive big buses.
A - You mean social bus?
B - Well, a big bus for 50 or 100 persons.
A - To drive to others countries?
B - Yes.
A - Ok. Fedya , how do you think – do dreams always come true?
B – If you strive for this dream and want it, so of course it will come true! But if you want… well… for example, a gun, and don’t do anything and don’t strive for this, so you won’t get it.
A - Ok, Fedya, how do you think, is it good to tell everybody about your dream?
B – No, it is not.
A – Why?
B – Well, because someone will laugh at you, but someone won’t.
A – And if they will laugh…so what?
B – So it means that they do wrong.
A – So it`s better not to tell about your dreams, isn’t it?
B – Yes, it is.
A – All right, Fedya, I hope your dreams will come true! Thank you!
Olga, 50 years old.
A – How do you do, Olga?
B – How do you do?
A – Ok, Olga, tell me please what is dream for you?
B – Dream?
A – Yes.
B – Well… Dream is something like a goal. Well, basically, the dream is like an unrealized goal… which busies your mind and I think it’s all not very useful.
A – Well, you think that the dreams don’t come true, don’t you?
B – I think that dreams come true mainly…
A – But under what conditions?
B – Well conditions are to believe and to try!
A – Nice, and how do you think is it good to tell someone about your dream?
B – Certainly! There’s nothing wrong in this but… if you just tell about this and don’t do anything to realize it, it is rather useless. Sometimes it confuses.
A – Well, and do you remember any dream of your childhood?
B – Yes, I do. I wants to have long hair… to have a beautiful plait… it dreamed me every night… and it still dreams me… and still I want it but I am too old for this now. In my childhood parents always cut my hair.
A – And does it disappoint you still?
B – Well, no, now I don’t care about this but this feeling – to have long hair – it was such bliss… such true childish bliss …
A – and have you ever had a life-dream?
B – I always was afraid of such dreams... Actually, I wanted to be happy, but I didn’t know what happiness is! Now I know that happiness is to work and to improve… you know, it`s discipline, rules, self-control… Well, I still can’t do it well but I have it as a dream... Yes-yes, exactly – to wake up at 6 o’clock, to pray, to clean the house… than to finish my arts… I want my children to be happy…
A – Well, in the whole, your dream is to regulate your life, isn’t it?
B – Well, yes, to discipline myself.
A – All right! Thank you!
B – You are welcome.
CHILD vs. ADULT
1) Firstly, I would like to analyze the very first question – what dream is. Fedya said that “Dream is something what a person dreams about” and Olga said “Dream is something like a goal”. So here we can see that Fedya’s definition was more abstract, on the whole, it has no sense. And Olga’s definition was very exact and complete. Also Fedya’s sentence was complex and, comparing with Olga’s one, it has more words. It shows that the formulation of Olga’s thoughts is more developed. In psychology it calls “the informative function of the speech”, and this function is developing during all the life, and due to age-specific difference, the formulation of Olga’s thought is more advanced than Fedya’s one.
2) Another question which shows the difference in speech was “do dreams always come true?” So, as an idea of speech, both answers were very close to each other, but, as a formulation of this idea, it was absolutely different. So Olga’s answer was “Well conditions are to believe and to try!” and Fedya’s answer was “If you strive for this dream and want it, so of course it will come true! But if you want… well… for example, a gun, and don’t do anything and don’t strive for this, so you won’t get it”. So , again, Olga’s answer was very short and simple, but Fedya’s answer was full of explanations and examples. So, the pithiness of speech was realized in Fedya’s speech but lucidity of the speech was in Olga’s. But, anyway, the idea of answers was similar and it means that this idea is ordinary truth and this idea can be understood by adult as well as by child.
3) And the last question I’d like to describe is “what is your dream”. This is the most complicated case because the massage of Fedya and Olga was absolutely different. Fedya said that he wanted to become a bus driver and Olga said that she wanted to discipline her life. And here the Fedya’s answer was shorter than Olga’s one. I suppose the answers of this question show the difference of experience. Even Olga started to remember her past, and Fedya’s dream is related to his future. Also it’s necessary to notice that Olga’s dream is connected to her inner world, but Fedya’s dream is about his future social status. So this proves that early adulthood is a stage where development is mainly focused on social surrounding and in the early adulthood you start to think about your future.
But as a speech aspect, Fedya’s answer was more primitive, it has lack of description, it was rather simple. And Olga’s speech was very diverse – it has enumeration, it has more link-words, the usage of different times and it has less repeats of the words with similar meaning, so, it means that her vocabulary is full of synonyms.
So, to sum it up, I would like to say that really speech is the matter of age. The more you live, the more your speech is beautiful and complicated. Also I noticed the regularity: when there’s ability to say everything in short, the child speaks a lot and when there’s ability to discuss something, child speaks in short. So the adults do absolutely in the opposite way. Also childish speech is more objective and adult speech is more subjective.
Ann, 18 years old, student.
A – Ok, let’s start Ann, tell me please – what is dream for you?
B – Well, dream… The dream is something you live for. Ha-ha-ha!!!
A – Cool!
B – Well, the dream is something… you know, I divide dream into two kinds – 1) dreams which can come true and which 2) can’t. So, for example, the dream which can’t come true is something like to have sex with Johnny Depp. But dream which CAN come true is like to travel to some Norway and to live there for some weeks…
A – Well, the dreams which can’t come true is called like cloud-castle or daydream.
B – Yes-yes, exactly.
A – And do you have your own dream?
B – Yes, I do.
A – And how do you think – is it cloud-castle or it can come true?
B – I think it can come true.
A – Can you tell about this dream?
B – And it will come true, if I tell it? Ha-ha-ha
A – Well, it depends on your striving.
B – Ho-ho!!! How can that be, really?!
B – Well, but anyway, my dream is…dream…
A – You told me about Norway, yes? So this is your dream, isn’t it?
B – Yes, it is my dream.
A – And is it your life-dream or not?
B – Well I don’t do anything to come it true now, but I think yes, it’s my life dream.
A - So could you tell me about it more detailed? If you do not want, ok, I won’t insist.
B – Well, I can but it seems to me that this dream is so girlish, you know… you won’t like it, I suppose…
A – Oh, come on, I am not going to laugh at your dream!
B – Ok, so the dream is … ok, now… to come to Norway with your man, with your love man – it’s the most important – and to live in some fjord, in separate house in the forest for 1-2 weeks… and…Well, to wake up in the morning in a little 1-floored wood house and go out on the porch, well, on the left side I see a river, on the right side I see forest, in front of me I see mountains… so then my dear comes out and hugs me, telling he loves me and brings me a cup of coffee.
A – Well, and all your dream lasts only 2 weeks?
B – Yes, it does.
A – Well, very pleasant dream! Ok, Ann, thank you for your speech! Hope your dream will come true
JOHN, 21 years old
A – So, let’s start! Hello, John!
B – Hello!
A – John, please, tell me, what is dream for you?
B – Dream?
A – Yes, dream. What is dream?
B – Dream.. is .. a goal which you should achieve and that’s all. Well, I mean there’s a dream like a cloud-castle and there’s a dream like… for example “I want to be a multi-millionaire and I do everything to become a multi-millionaire” and “I want to become...” I don’t know… for example “a cleaner and I can do nothing to become a cleaner”… so well, you simply go and work as a cleaner.
A – Ok, so you believe that if you want to realize your dream and do everything to realize it, so it will come true undoubtedly, yes?
B – Yes, if you do EVERYTHING for this… Not like sitting on the same place all the time and “dreaming”….
A – All right, do you remember any dream of your childhood?
B – Of childhood… well, I remember that in classroom, when I was in nursery school, I told that I had wanted to become a fireman. But, really, I didn’t want to become a fireman. I just answered this because someone also said “I want to become a fireman”. And, rats… I do not want to become a fireman!!!
A – Haha!! Very nice, and do you have any dream now?
B – Well, I want to realize myself into music…and I immerse myself into music at all… but of course a lot of things retards it… work and alcohol…
A – Haha, well, the last question is – how do you think – is it good or bad to tell about your dream to anybody?
B – Well, it’s better to keep it to yourself… So, well, “I dream a dream..” and so what? What’s purpose of that? Talk less, do more!
A – Ok, thank you a lot!
B – You are welcome.
MALE vs. FEMALE
Well, the first question to describe is “what is dream for you?” Anya said “The dream is something you live for” and John said “Dream.. is .. a goal which you should achieve”. As you can see, Anya’s answer was more abstract then John’s one, and John’s answer was exact and total. I suppose it shows the difference of intellection, that male person has logical intellection, but female has conceptual intellection.
But I was surprised when they both started to classify the dream and give examples. I suppose this connects with age-specific aspect – they are both near 20.
The next question is “what is your dream?”. John said “, I want to realize myself into music…” and Anya said “… to come to Norway with your man, with your love man – it’s the most important – and to live in some fjord, in separate house in the forest for 1-2 weeks… and…Well, to wake up in the morning in a little 1-floored wood house and go out on the porch, well, on the left side I see a river, on the right side I see forest, in front of me I see mountains… so then my dear comes out and hugs me, telling he loves me and brings me a cup of coffee.”
So, again, it proves that male is more exact then female but female is livelier. Anya’s speech was full of emotions; it seems that she forgets about everything at that moment.
John’s speech was rather short, cool and exact. Probably such difference of speech is the matter of different understanding what dream is. John said – this is goal – and he than he described his goal, but Ann said – something you live for (probably it’s a dream, very pleasant fancy which makes out life more cheerful.) – so she describes her fancy.
But, on the whole, I noticed the biggest difference in precision of speech – John’s sentences were all finished and complete, but Ann’s sentences were unfinished, but at the same time, they were long and full of explanations and examples. Ann has more link-verbs, she used more conjunctions, she has the diversity of sentences (simple, compound, complex). And John’s sentences were, as a rule, simple and his speech had lack of adjectives.
To sum it up, I can say that male’s speech is rather exact and complete, but female’s speech is more abstract, but it’s more diverse. So, probably woman will tell story-tales in perfect way, but man won’t succeed in this. But man will advise as no one else, speaking direct.
So, to each his own!

Dreams are among the myriad mysteries of Nature which still stay unraveled and hidden from the light of discovery and openness. Dreams have no definition to characterize them, nor do they have any definite identity. They are always there in all our lives, but they are still like a stranger, unknown and questioned! Some attribute dreams as a channel which let away all such elements of the mind which lay trap in darkness, while we are conscious. They may be regarded as a show case of the semi conscious state of the mind, which gets lightened while the body sleeps. On the other hand, for some, dreams serve as mere recaps for all that we touch, see, feel, hear, think and all that goes on while we are awake.…

There are many theorists who debate whether men speak differently to women, most have tests and experiments to back these theories up. She analysed the links between language and gender in her book ?anguage and women? place where she questions who holds the power in a conversation and how they use it. Lakoff stated that there were certain features of women? language that gave the impression that women are weaker and less certain than men are.
