If the book was read by the people in India then I think that women who are subjected to their husbands don’t find mother-woman a problem but, Edna being in a relationship with Robert would be a big problem. Arranged marriage is very common in India. They believe that women should take care of the house while their husbands are working and earning for the family. So, they would most likely think of Mrs. P who was married to Mr. P and likes Robert a really bad thing and so they would most likely hate Edna and the book. This might not be a case with the other people in a different country. So, the cultures and traditions differ among different people and so they interpret the text in a different way.
