It has been recommended by some that humans have the capability of demonstrating free will and mindful choice to be a part of or engage in criminal behaviour. Others have recommended that our behaviour is 'pre-established'. With reference to “AJCSD Criminal Behaviour – Free Will v. Determinism” the document critically analyses the above argument from a phycological perspective with regard to free will and determinism stating that freedom has never been absolute, free will and determinism has been a very important aspect in trying to explain and define causality of criminal behaviour it’s important to note that, free will and determinism polarises psychology and law.…
The brain is a powerful, mystical part of every living being. It controls what we think, what we do, and how we act. Every day we are faced with decisions. As a human being, we are given the intelligence and brain to make conscious decisions, whether they are good decisions or bad decisions. We have the free will to make them, but is our decision truly conscious? There are many things that influence or determine our behavior. The brain works in magical ways, sometimes with reason and sometime without. Many times we may question our behavior. Libet's experiment looked at the brain and hot it affects our decisions to act or not act, which is basically our free will. Benjamin Libet wanted to explore whether our free will was really free or tied…
The Times argues in their article “Do You Have Free Will? Yes, It’s the Only Choice” that free will probably does not exist but people are better off believing in it. The article discusses a study done by Dr. Kathleen Vohs that concludes “the higher the [test subjects] scored on the scale of belief in free will, the better their ratings on the job.” The Atlantic’s article “There’s No Such Thing as Free Will” suggests that free will does not exist but also shows that people who believe in free will are less stressed and more creative. Both articles share the idea that free will makes people more optimistic. Believing in free will gives people the idea that people can make good decisions. It lets people believe that morality exists and people are able to make good decisions on their…

Stan Lee, creator of many of the Marvel movies, once said, “With great power there must also come… great responsibility.” Free will is like a great power that has been given to us. It can be used for good and evil. As humans, we believe that we have a choice in everything. Thus the idea of free will. But because of that choice there will always be a downside to free will.…
There are three main positions in the free will debate; determinism, compatibilism, and libertarianism. In my opinion, the strongest argument of these is compatibilism due to it agreeing with my views and beliefs on the subject of free will.…
Consider this. Sadie walks into the store intending to buy M&Ms. Instead she chooses against it because she would rather have Skittles. So she checks out and merrily goes on her way with her Skittles. Is this free will? What if she had wanted to buy marijuana, but that was not there because it is illegal? Is that still free will? Or is someone or something controlling the choices she makes? Or how about this case. Joe gets arrested for stealing. He goes to jail without having the option to say no. Is this free will? Well, it was free will when Joe was stealing. Joe chose to steal, therefore he received the punishment, which was made clear in laws for that county. Yes, that is free will. But, do we really have free will, or are we given guidelines that make us believe we have free will but in reality are controlled by someone in authority?…
The results of these studies reinforce the evidence that nurses contribute to the effective functioning and communication of the trauma team. A study that introduced a nurse team leader improved the perceptions of a nurse led trauma team within the ED (Clements et al., 2015). The leadership role for a nurse leading a trauma team requires the nurse to oversee the trauma team resuscitation in conjunction with the medical team leader. It is important that they work together to ensure the smooth running of both the medical and team elements of the resuscitation effort. The concept of overseeing the team enables the nurse to compile a well structured team which is known to work more effectively (Cooper and Wakelam, 1999). The culture of the trauma…
Determinism is a controversial topic to free will with multiple theories proving and disproving it. As printed in The Collins Cobuild Learner's Dictionary, determinism is defined as “...the belief that all actions and events result from other actions, events, or situations, so people cannot in fact choose what to do.” Meaning, all life choices are predetermined from the minute we are born, to the minute we die. In contrast, “freewill is an individual taking control and responsibility for his/her actions according to his personal will” (Freewill Verses Determinism). People who believe in Free will, accept the idea that life is not predetermined, and they can independently act however they see fit. Free will and determinism can be further simplified and have multiple differences as well as similarities.…
There are many boundaries that affect how much we can change or alter what we are set out to become. Growing up a middle class white teenager I have always felt I must become the regular hard-working family man my father is. I have choices, however society’s image of an American male adult plays a major factor in the shaping of the man I will become. In the four pieces from the reader, the authors collectively believe they must conform to society’s perfect image of what they must look like and become. It is this pressure that has transformed me into the individual I am today. My life is pre-determined by my race and gender but I believe I have as much free will as I would like to express myself and change my status as an individual in today’s society. Free will is defined as the ability to choose, and I believe we all have that right to choose what we look like and become when we age. I believe free will is one of the most important aspects of living in a free society, like the one in which we live in today.…
I would lean more towards the compatibilist view stating, unless I am the cause of my actions I am not responsible for them. As compatibilist holds that free will and determinism are compatible, we can properly understand what it means for our actions to be free so we see that a free action is doing what one wants. Believing in compatibilism doesn't mean the determinist view is false, but if it is true, we can still have free will. I believe that we make decisions based on our own desires and beliefs. It is said that compatibilists attempt to revise and weaken the commonsense notion of free will. Thomas Hobbes was the first person to articulate a compatibilist position believing that although the person is free to act on their motive, the motive is determined. In other words, he says “Everything we choose to do is strictly determined by the need to relieve the physical pressures of our bodies. Humans…
The argument of whether we humans are pre determined to turn out how we are and act the way we do or if we are our own decision makers and have the freedom to choose our paths in life is a long-standing controversy. The ideas of Sartre, Freud, and Darwin are each strong in their own manner, yet Sartre presents the best and most realistic argument as to how we choose our path; we are in control of the things we do and responsible for the decisions we make. Not only this, but also, our decisions have an effect on our peer’s choices, just as theirs affect ours. In this paper, I will argue that Jean-Paul Sartre makes the best argument of the three philosophers in saying we can choose our own path and direction in life because as humans we are consciously aware of what is going on around us and base our decisions on that.…
I personally believe that we as human beings are given free will. For instance, lets say there is an all omniscient God and lets say he knows what we will do and what our destiny is but he sends you a problem to over come such as,…
