In Ceremony, stories are told by memory. His memories are both painful and healing in a way. Painful in the sense that remember Josiah and Rocky makes Tayo feel sad, guilty, angry, fearful etc., but also healing because remember the past of his people helps heal him/make him feel better. All of these memories help us learn how the past is important to Tayo’s present and future. The flashbacks demonstrate how the past is still important. On page 152, Tayo is remembering some of these things again and the medicine man says that nine days is not long enough for the ceremony anymore. Tayo still has healing that needs to take place, still has things he needs to learn. The ceremony taking place and the memories Tayo has combined with the stories of his people shows how the past is structuring the present. In the new ceremony Betonie being performed he mentions old ceremonies, again the memories in the story serve a purpose: to heal.
