Through World War II there were many naval ships that were sunk. One of the major naval ships that sunk was the U.S.S. Indianapolis. This ship was an important factor in winning the war but she tragically sunk during her mission. Of the one thousand one hundred and ninety-six men aboard, only three hundred and seventeen survived (Field). The “Indy” was written down as the worst naval disaster in history.…

In both cases of loads being released into the ocean, cargo was found many months later. Thousands of Nike shoes were found along the beaches of Alaska, Canada, Washington, and Oregon as long as 6 months after the occurrence, and bathtub toys began to float to shore in southeast Alaska as long as 10 months after. Since these events, oceanographers have unceasingly studied and reviewed ocean currents by tracing other floating objects spilled from cargo ships further refining older methods such as “drift bottles”. In my opinion this article was very interesting to read because its refers to a modern topic and I agree with the newer methods that are not only more efficient but also resourceful and effective since ocean spills are bound to happen.…
The Penascola Gulf Islands in Florida are pretty much your average definition of paradise. The area is known for the most beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters. The beach stretches for miles along the Gulf of Mexico, full of people constructing hammocks to lie in the warm sun, standing for hours fishing, and many many others jumping around the waves and surfing or swimming in the calm waters. These islands are essentially a strip of land completely surrounded by water, which means you’ll get a good view wherever you go. With many resorts, restaurants, and coastal areas, these islands have all you need.…
I went to the Art Museum of South Texas to take a look at the artwork they had on display there. I found that they had an exhibit called Liquid Light and it included black and white photographs of the sea and its inhabitants. In this exhibit there were works from 10 different photographers and while I loved and developed an appreciation for many of the photographs on display the one that caught my eye was the “Diving Humpback whale” by Wayne Levin (born 1945). This paper will focus on why Wayne Levin takes photographs of the underwater world and why the “Diving Humpback Whale” photograph was my favorite.…
The controversial methods and actions of oil companies to extract/transport their products, such as fracking, have to be banned and prevented immediately and companies must find more efficient and environmentally-friendly ways to extract/transport these natural resources in order to keep the environment safe.…
In the "case of the shipwrecked sailors", three men were marooned after the sinking of an oil tanker. Subject to extreme conditions and starvation, the men drew lots after about twenty five days and decided that the loser would be killed and eaten as food. When one of the men lost the draw, he pulled out his consent, and the other two men killed him anyway, eating him. Five days later, the remaining two men were rescued and ensuing actions incurred their murder charges. This seems to be a simple case over the battle of life and death, and it truly is. The two men, Dudley and Stephens, made a conscious decision to commit not only the crime of murder, but the atrocity of cannibalism. Crime is crime and law is law- when breaks a law and commits a crime, a punishment must ensue.…

“When I think of pirates, I think of the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Aden. I don’t think of the Ohio River.” (Lepper) Mark Twain lived during a time when hearing someone’s relation of a river pirate in America was typical, and stores along the rivers were frequently being pillaged. He had much experience on the rivers due to his early profession, and witnessed first-hand the crimes that they committed. Twain expressed his thoughts toward piracy through his literature, written around the time that these greedy bandits took place. In the late 18th century, river pirates roamed the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, hunting for pioneers traveling down the river with their cargo. A common location for them to reside was a large tavern referred to as Cave-In-Rock, and since this was so easily disguised the pirates used their cunning and intelligence to scam the pioneers into their trap. River pirates were an essential element to America’s history, and they provided for many of the hardships the pioneers had to face when living in early America.…

Hello, journal! It is our first official day of this adventure I am about to take on the HMS Challenger. The weather isn’t to dandy today in England where we are leaving from, it’s a little rainy and cold, the worst mixture. But! We have to get a move on, I’m extremely excited to embark on this journey and I am honored to be a part of this history. I’m most excited and feel a sort of curiosity because we have such an abundant amount of useful technology. It’s beautiful! We have microscope, which is used to look extremely close into thing we find on the bottom of the ocean which is picked up by something called the bottom sampler. The bottom sampler is like a giant net that goes along the ocean floor picking up particles and specimens. Things like shells and small sea animals are dragged into the net.…
Some of my family were there picking seashells for a home project, so I joined the scavenger hunt. After picking out a few perfect looking shells, I stumbled on this large sea shell. It was white but not pure white like a few shells tend to be. It was the most scarred shell I had ever seen. It reminded me of an accident victim with scar tissue damage. It reminded me of a survivor. It reminded me of me. It reminded me of a lot of people who had gone through, and were still here to tell their story.…
