John Steinbeck’s novel carries of lot of symbolism on its pages. It is owing to these symbols the author revealed the characters to the reader. One of the most important symbols of the novel is the symbolism of the Candy’s dog. As Candy’s dog is no longer needed and has given birth to new strong sheepdogs the only possible resolution is to kill the “unnecessary” animal. This killing is hidden behind the motive of not making the dog suffer. Once somebody becomes weak – he is no longer needed. Though Candy loves his dog he does not stop Carlson from killing it. The key of this symbolism is that Candy himself is an “old sheepdog” and Lennie becomes an “old sheepdog” at the end of the novel.…
Pico Iyer’s uses heat in various ways throughout his essay, “Inner Climate”. Iyer starts out by describing how heat in our outward climate causes changes. He then talks about how our “inner waters” (694) need to be tended to before our “outer environment” (694) can be healed. He concludes by telling us about his own small changes that may not change the world, still have a small impact on changing things slowly.…
In his absolutely definitive book, “Explore Phantom Black Dogs”, the author and researcher Bob Trubshaw wrote the following: ‘The folklore of phantom black dogs’, is known throughout the British Isles. From the black shuck of East Anglia to the Mauthe Dhoog of the Isle of Man there are tales of huge spectral hounds ‘darker than the night sky’ with eyes ‘glowing red as burning coals.’ Hell Hound myths are known around the world, however, while a number of intriguing theories exist to explain the presence and nature of such spectral-like beasts, certainly the most ominous is that they represent some form of precursor to- or instigator of- doom, tragedy and death.…
Mother tended to blame others for the Airedale's actions he did not bite the family as often as he bit strangers. In the years that they had Muggs he bit everybody but mother. Muggs was always sorry after he bit someone. One incident was when Muggs bit Roy with a vicious bite in the leg. Muggs was all done, he does not bite anyone more than once. Mother always said that he had a quick temper but he did not hold a grudge. (pg3) Another incident was when Muggs bit the congressman. Mother sent him a box of candy that christmas. The congressman sent it back because he thought that it was poisoned. Mother said “ I would not be associated with such a man. ” “Muggs could read him like a book.” (pg2)…
Hand’s like wolf paws and a bull-neck; both descriptions which were used to describe those who Elie saw at camps, it was as if they had gained animal-like characteristics. Throughout the book, there are plenty of examples of dehumanization one of many being how the Jews at the camps were treated as animals, and at times called pigs. The most shocking example being when there’s bread thrown into the train cart, after walking several miles and later being sent to a Gleiwitz for three days lacking in food and water the results of such a simple action as throwing bread to their cart were horrifying. Some even going against their own family in the fight for survival.…
A large Mastiff guard-dog named Keeper stalked Emily Brontë everywhere she went, acting like her second shadow. The affectionate duo had grown up together, and after her death, he howled in agony for numerous days, lamenting her departure. The importance canines had in her life parallels the significance of canines in her book. Throughout the novel Wuthering Heights, dogs function as symbols that reveal a character’s future.…

Music can be more than just something to dance or sing along to. It is also a form of art and a way for people to let their feelings out in a different way. Many people write music to express any sort of feeling, such as happiness, anger, and depression. By putting out their music they can connect to their fans, friends, and family in a way that is easier for them and everyone can find a way to relate to them. The songs “From Dog to God” by Prayers, “Undercover Martyn” by Two Door Cinema Club, and “Hey You” by Pink Floyd all express the effects of isolation and how it gets in the way of their lives.…

In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time the setting effects the story in so many ways. For example the story takes place in 1998, which means that there is good transportation, modern relationships, and similar or even the same problems that there are today. For example when Christopher decided to run away from home because it wasn’t safe anymore, he was able to go on the train to visit his mother. The time period also had an immense effect on the story because there were modern living situations. Modern living situations had a huge effect on the story because Christopher was able to see Wellington dead from his window, in his neighbor’s backyard. Another massive effect that the setting has on Christopher’s adventure…
The third factor that BSL ignores is the factor of history. What is the dog’s genealogy and history of ownership? Has it been abused or abandoned? Much like humans, dogs are able to keep these traumatic memories in order to build the personality they upon adoption in present day. According to the Journal of Animal Applied Animal Welfare Science that did a research study on behaviors with dogs who have been abused and those who lived in healthy conditions. It wasn’t a surprise when the dogs who were abused seemed to perform ‘bizarre’ and ‘repetitive’ activities. It isn’t rocket science to think when an animal has a history of being abused that it would keep a stronger stance and enact in a more aggressive manner. This aggressive manner is…
“‘I shouldn’t ought let no stranger shoot my dog”’(61). Everyone wants a life with no regrets and Candy ends up regretting not killing his own best friend, instead of killing his dog he lets Carlson shoot him, and now he regrets it. The killing of Candy’s dog foreshadows the death of Lennie because the dog was shot in the back of the head like Lennie is, this quote is extremely important in the book because it is a statement that sticks with George especially when Lennie is being chased and Curley plans to kill him. George doesn’t want someone else killing his best friend, and when it comes down to it George kills Lennie. George also knows that if someone else were to kill Lennie that they would not have sympathy and George would end up regretting it for the rest of his life just like Candy. “‘Got a Luger”’(47). “‘I’ll get my Luger”’(96). These are two simple and very similar quotes but both times Carlson’s Luger was talked about someone or something died. The first time Carlson says he has a Luger he kills Candy’s dog, and the second time he mentions he will get his Luger it is when George kills Lennie. Carlson’s Luger is used to kill Candy’s dog and Lennie in the same exact way… in the back of the head. Also, this is an act of persuasion by the other ranch hands because Candy wasn’t ready for his dog to die and he was sad that everyone thought so, George in the same situation later when he doesn’t want Curley or anyone to kill Lennie because he doesn’t think it’s Lennie’s time but George knew that it had to be done.…
The plan today is to go to Sparta, IL to visit two clients, one client was at home and the other client was at school. My first visit was with Hulk; a seventeen year old White male. He is on probation for auto theft. Hulk and his friends stole a car and went joy riding around town. Hulk lives in a trailer with his mother and step-father. When we approached the trailer I was hesitant to go in because it was dirty outside and it smelled of animals. I like animals, but I hate the odor of animals. When the caseworker opened the door Hulk answered the door and I was bombarded by two dogs. Hulk has three dogs and a cat. One dog was barking from the time we got in the door until we sat down then the other two dogs were jumping and sniffing the caseworker…
In “The Dog That Bit People”, Mother blamed others for the Airedale’s actions. First, when Muggs gnawed the iceman, Mother blamed it on the iceman sputtering “If you didn’t think he would bite you, he wouldn’t.” Furthermore, when the police officer stopped by their house, Mother told him that it hadn't been Muggs’ fault but the fault of the people who were bitten claiming “When he starts for them, they scream and that excites him.” Even more, when the narrator himself got bit, his own Mother took Muggs’ side saying she did not know what possessed him. This clearly shows that mother would go to the extreme to stand up for the Airedale by placing the blame on the victims of Muggs’ violent actions.…
