The Don Juan Pond In Antarctica
Introduction

Fun Fact: The Don Juan Pond in Antarctica is the saltiest place on Earth. Does that have anything to do with an Ecocolumn? No. What is an Ecocolumn? An Ecocolumn is essentially a tiny ecosystem in a bottle. A few bottles. And it's not an ecosystem. It has three chambers: Terrestrial, Decomposition, and Aquatic. The Terrestrial Chamber has the soil, the sun, and is the entrance into the Ecocolumn. The Decomposition Chamber is where decomposers break down the dead organic matter. The Aquatic Chamber has the water, the fish, and some aquatic plants. An Ecocolumn is useful for making a model of an ecosystem to be studied in a controlled environment. An Ecocolumn and an ecosystem both have biotic and abiotic factors that

The abiotic factors were soil, sunlight (or light), water, and gravel. The biotic factors were the plants and other organisms. Independent variables were the levels of water and coffee grounds added. Dependent variables included the acidity, even though it wasn't measured at all, and the well-beings of the …show more content…
A secondary question for this "study" is: With coffee grounds added, how will it affect the Ecocolumn and the organisms within it? Along with the hypothesis, a prediction made prior to completing the construction of the Ecocolumn was that everything will die. As it turned out, everything died a week later. The joys of being pessimistic.

Model

In theory, an Ecocolumn functions as a model of an ecosystem. But in reality, the Carbon Cycle and other biogeochemical cycles were extremely limited in the ecocolumn. Because the ecocolumn is only a model of an ecosystem, not a real one. There was not great flow, as water goes down to the Aquatic Chamber and then stays there.

The model drawn above looks much better than its real-life counterpart. It shows life in the ecocolumn. There was difficulty in visualizing observable patterns of biogeochemical cycles because there are few variables and too little energy flow.

Can you smell the regretful failure? It probably smells like dirt.

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms joined with the non-living components of their environment interacting as a system. Mangroves, Rocky Shores and Sand Dunes may be seen as three independent parts of the ecosystem but if one is disturbed then it affects the other parts of the cycle. There are many examples of ecosystems such as a pond, forest, an estuary, grassland and many more. Hastings Point is an estuary that is continuously threatened by development.…

Obvious changes in my ecocolumn are the growth of the plants. They have grown substantially and look healthy. This is probably because they are getting optimal amounts of sunlight and water. Also the fish is very active, although the water is a bit murky due to fish waste and soil leaking into the water when the plants are watered.…

An ecosystem is composed of the producers, consumers, decomposers and the living organism that interact and reside in this habitat. They are part of the food web and their roles are important in maintaining the environment. Producers make food, the consumers feed on it but at the same time the decomposers also break down the food to go back to the food web. Mother Nature has assigned different roles (plants and animals) that will sustain our environment and as caretakers we must preserve the ecosystem (no land clearing) so that it will continue to thrive and…

An ecosystem consists of the biological community that occurs in some locale, and the physical and chemical factors that make up its non-living or abiotic environment. There are many examples of ecosystems: a pond, a forest, an estuary, grassland. The boundaries are not fixed in any objective way, although sometimes they seem obvious, as with the shoreline of a small pond. Usually the boundaries of an ecosystem are chosen for practical reasons having to do with the goals of the particular study. The study of ecosystems mainly consists of the study of certain processes that link the living, or biotic, components to the non-living, or abiotic, components. Energy transformations and biogeochemical cycling are the main processes that comprise the field of…

Since the biosphere is way too large and complex for scientists to study as a whole, so they separate it into smaller units call ecosystems. There are two things that make up an ecosystem, the areas physical features (abiotic factors) and living organisms (biotic factors). The organisms living together in an ecosystem are called a community. Sometimes things in one ecosystem are affected from another ecosystems, so ecosystems are not self contained.…
