During the time this piece was created, Frida was struggling with a great deal of emotional pain because her husband was cheating on her with a popular film star. The fate of her relationship with Diego was constantly on her mind. The third eye might have represented Frida’s wish to keep a close eye on her husband or it could have been referring to the Evil Eye belief that is a part of Mexican culture. The I found it interesting when I began researching the culture behind Evil Eye. Different cultures in Mexico and Central America have their own adaptations of the story behind the eye. One of the popular stories reads, “it was strongly feared that when a powerful person stares at a weak individual, the eyes of the strong person drain the power and soul from the weak one regardless of intentions” (Gurung 4). It was important to me to still involve all of the themes she once painted into my own piece. Frida Kahlo was a strong woman and I believe she is a great icon for what we see as feminism in society today. She refused to let life’s struggles hold her back. She channeled all of her pain and suffering into a great art form. She was unapologetically her and she challenged the male figures that dominated the art industry. The piece I created, highlights a few of the symbols that were important to Frida. I envision these symbols are still relevant today and it can relate to anyone in today’s society whether you are a feminist or not. Frida reminds us that we are all stronger than the emotional or physical pain we might experience in life. Our negative experiences don’t have to break our spirits. We choose how we react to the unexpected in life. Embrace it and learn from it. Your personal experience might be able to help someone else in a similar situation. The symbols also remind us all to be proud of our roots and traditions. Be unapologetically you and be bold in life. You don’t have to identify as a feminist to relate to these symbols. Frida Kahlo was a strong woman who has impacted the art industry and the society we know today. We are reminded through her art and feminists today. Frida Kahlo is a great artist and feminist in
