The DREAMers movement has used unique strategies and tactics to change public policy while concurrently lobbing to gain political representation for those youth who arrived to the United States as children. Several tactics used to further these strategies are storytelling, marches, hunger strikes, and online activism. This movement holds conferences on immigration, education, politics, leadership and civil rights as their form of lobbying in order to educate others on the movement and to express their demands to the legislative branch of the government (www.huffingtonpost.com). Online activism for the DREAMers movement consisted of calls for action via email, social networks, text messages, coordinating on group events, running merchandise give a ways, organizing house parties, running radio and television ads. These strategies provided comfort for those individual who wanted to help but were afraid to attend the protest because of fear that they may be deported. Online activism allowed those people who were committed to the movement to help in other ways. Many people organized events and through social media other people made sure to get the word out about the any upcoming events. They are beneficial to them because this movement provides a variety of ways in which people can help the movement. Some people are too afraid to be physically present in marches or don’t agree or can’t commit to going on hungry strikes therefore for some individuals their main form of participation is through online activism where they don’t have to expose themselves to being deported. Those who were brave enough to come out about their status really pushed the movement forward and it also expanded the movement making it bigger and more welcoming for anyone to join whether they were undocumented or not, or only undocumented or undocumented and queer. The strategies taken up by this movement have been effective and beneficial to people and the movement and they have proved to work in the past as it was seen with the DREAM Act.
