What is an essay? Is it just a long line of sentences one after another? Dictionary.com (2013) defines an “essay” as “a short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative” (n.p.). In other words an essay is a piece of work that is written from another person’s point of view which consists of a group of paragraphs. The purpose of an essay is to allow one to express his or her views effectively. An essay consists of three main parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction gives the reader a little preview of what they are about to read. It can sometimes give background information on the topic and tell the reader what the writer hopes to achieve by the completion of the reading. The introduction normally ends with a look-ahead. The look-ahead tells the reader the exact topics that will come in the body and the order they will come in. After in introduction comes the body of the paper. The body of an essay goes into more elaborative information of the topic or topics listed in the introduction. After the body comes a conclusion. The conclusion is a brief summary of all the ideas presented in the body of the paper. . An essay can be descriptive, argumentative and critical. The most common type of essay is a descriptive essay. Fiction press (2013) defines a descriptive essay as “use the senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste to provide the reader with a mental image or feeling” (n.p.). In other word a descriptive essay is an essay that appeals to one’s scenes. Its main purpose serves to allow a reader to see, smell, feel, hear and taste whatever the writer wants them to with the most vivid and clear picture.
