The Effectiveness of Detergents
Laundry detergents are found in every household and used for removing stains and oils from clothes so they could be reused. The production of this invention first started in the United States in the 1930s but started becoming very popular only after the Second World War because the military required a chemical to remove the dirt and oil off their military outfits (Clean Living). Laundry detergents have a combination of chemicals which combat different barriers to clean the fabric. They have different substances to break through the water, separate oils from the fabric, break apart larger molecules, whiten the fabric, sanitize the clothing, keep the fabric dry, and preserve the detergent. There are financial barriers to having effective detergents because it is required by every household and has a high demand; the prices need to be low and affordable for the general public. The average price of 100 oz of Tide detergent is $11 (Walmart). The ethical issue is the Tide Company is adding alternatives that have harmful impacts on public health and the environment (Huffington Post). There is no need for detergent manufacturers to add dangerous chemicals because there are better alternatives that could be used, it harms the environment, and detergents are deadly if consumed.
After many experiments and suggestions, laundry detergents are constantly being improved by the manufacturers to combat all issues. The most effective component in detergents is the active surface materials, or the surfactants. They have two sides, a polar hydrophilic side which is attracted to water and the other non-polar hydrophobic side which repels water but attracts oil. It’s very effective because it resolves the issue of oil not mixing with water. This way it can break through the surface of the water using the polar side but break the oils apart using the non-polar side. The anionic surfactants are most common because it reacts well with hard water containing many cations, such as Ca+2 .

    8. Surfactants are wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid, allowing easier spreading, and lower the interfacial tension between two liquids. Surfactants improve water's ability to wet things, spread over surfaces, and seep into dirty clothes fibres. One end of their molecule is attracted to water, while the other end is attracted to dirt and grease. So the surfactant molecules help water to get a hold of grease, break it up, and wash it away. Soaps and detergents are both emulsifying agents and…

Having such a broad statement “Be Unforgettable” is very interesting in my opinion because nobody truly understand how this laundry detergent and fabric softener could make someone unforgettable. Saying you will be unforgettable is wrong to say because as some people may like or dislike the product, it could never make anyone unforgettable. In the text in Figure 1 it also tries to explain that “You’ll remember the days you wear it”. This statement is very false because not only is this just laundry detergent, it doesn’t don’t much more than if you were to go to the dollar store and pick up some laundry detergent there. In the background of the advertisement, it looks as if they are portraying Downy Infusions to smell like a beautiful garden full of pink roses or flowers. As anyone would be thinking about how false that information can be, think of all the possible reasons as to why they would try and trick people about the scent. Along with the flowers, it seems that in advertisement there is a racially ambiguous girl as the main model trying to sell the product. She is very attractive and gives good vibes to the advertisement. She is wearing a beautiful floral dress that compliments the background of the garden that this particular laundry detergent is supposed to smell like. This immediately draws attention to her and…

In both stores we observed Tide first. This product was located at the front of the aisle in both stores, taking up a large amount of shelf space. Tide’s bright orange and blue packaging made the brand more visible than both store brands. Tide’s yellow and orange target-like symbol also makes the brand very noticeable. The Tide brand includes a variety of detergent including liquid, powder, and pods. Each of these forms of detergent comes in different sizes, which allows the consumer to pick the size that best fits his or her needs. Tide’s depth of product line includes ten special detergents to choose from. Whether the consumer is looking for the original, or the NFL Sports Edition, Tide has it all. Tide also offers detergent for high efficiency machines, which is becoming more popular in today’s market. Tide’s investment in producing high efficiency machines detergent is smart on their part due to the fact that this detergent profitability will continue to rise as the popularity of these machines increase.…
