THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Why is Education important for all Children? What is the goal of Education? The Experience of education in schools provides the opportunity for children to acquire skills for adult life and work. These experiences equip children to become successful adults.
This goal applies as well with children without has special needs in Education like the child with autism, learning disability & Mental retardation which includes Down syndrome.
Children with Down syndrome have the following difficulties: below average cognitive ability, poor in working memory, difficulty in producing clear speech and socially sensitive. These problems should be addressed in choosing the right approach for them.
As a Future Sped Teacher, we aid in giving the children with Down syndrome their best chances in leading independent and functional life. It is because of this that we have to be aware on different teaching approaches that will best develop and utilized their skills.
Nowadays, these are different way in educating Children with Down syndrome, they would be mainstreamed or they could benefit in a segregated special education schools like Montessori.
A Montessori school used an approach in the same name and is one of the widely accepted approaches in Educating Children. It is characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits and respect for a child’s natural psychological development. Students learn from working with materials rather than by direct instruction. There are several things about the Montessori approach that make it a wonderful option for Children with Down syndrome, it uses hands on type of learning to explore and learn. The activities can be modified to fit the needs of the children; they work at their own pace and encouraged them to follow their interest.
