Everyday businesses provide the world with products and services. People in general are just not self-sufficient. Who has time to make their own clothes, own meals,clean their own house, or even watch their own kids? Today's every growing business world and advancements in technology make it extremely easy to obtain anything one could ever desire provided they have the money to buy it. Many people gained great success and wealth from their original product and business ideas. People have alsogained great wealth from borrowing, stealing or adapting from one "original" idea. Over the past 20 years, fake airplane bolts have damaged their engines, fake birth control pills have cause internal bleeding, and phony brake pads have caused fatal accidents. Most counterfeiter realize that what they are doing is illegal,but don't realize its affects on society. (Estok 30) One can protect or patent their product, slogan, or logo. In order to do so, their product or mark should be sent to the US Patent and Trademark Office in Washington D C. The product will then start to have state protection, and will later be registered for federal protection if it is distributed in more than one state. Many people believe that simply by incorporating that they are legally protected. (Munro53R) However, incorporating does not mean they are registered with the state or federal government. To register, an application form must be filled out. Next, the application is inspected and must comply with the formal patent requirements of the patent laws and rules of practice of the US Patent Office. (Mandell24) If the trademark is approved, the Patent Trademark Office will issue a certificate of registration. This will occur within fifteen to eighteen months. The certificate issued is good for twenty years after the filing date. After that time period is up, it must be renewed every five
