The Silent Spring was the right science book published at the right time. It brought the concerns about environmental to the general public. It led to a nationwide ban on DDT and the creation of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency. DDT’s insecticidal action was discovered by the Swiss chemist in 1939 ("DDT"). The widely use in agricultural started after the World War II. The Swiss chemist was even awarded the Nobel Prize since DDT was so efficiency to kill inserts. Nevertheless people did not notice that DDT was also a great threat to the environmental and wildlife especially birds. People like to talk about sustainable development in recent years; DDT is a great counter example of it. Although it is very efficiency to kill inserts, it…
After reading the article “Pandora’s Water Bottle,” I found out that endocrine disrupting chemicals had played a significant role that altered the normal functioning of both wildlife and humans. Therefore, when we exposed to these chemicals in the environment, we would experience some symptoms, such as sleep disorders, reproduction problems, depression, or developmental problems. All in all, do you think it relates to products that we use to clean our home? Definitely yes. The more we exposed to these products, the more we likely absorbed these chemicals.…
Through our wide span utilization of chemicals, we’ve altered the condition of our Earth in unpretentious ways. Such chemicals include arsenic (which is a supreme cancer causer) and DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloror-ethane). With the mentioning of DDT, the idea is introduced that these toxins not only stick to our bodies by hiding in our fats and bones but also act as mutations that can be carried on to our next generations. She spends the majority of the chapter listing off other pesticides like Dieldrin, Heptachlor, Chlordane, and Aldrin. She also talks of herbicides which are chemicals that kill plants…
Many people don't know agent orange is one of the chemicals that causes the most health effects ever, and causes mass hate between people? Agent Orange was sprayed aerially to decrease vietnamese coverage, but also causes birth defects and different types of cancer. The effect to the human body, the chemicals in the mixture, and how it affected the relationship with Vietnam and the U.S was an important asset to the Vietnam war.…
Day to day the land becomes further polluted by humans. The well-being of the environment is threatened by these pollutants. These pollutants include DDTs, PCBs, and organophosphate pesticides. DDT was once thought of as a very effective chemical. It was…
Our modern society and technology revolves around many different chemical compounds. Advances in the chemical field of herbicides or pesticides, while being beneficial to our society, can come at a price. Without proper testing and research, harmful chemical compounds may be released into the environment unknowingly. Some compounds, even though thoroughly tested, may only exhibit malicious effects years after being introduced to the environment. Such a case would be the story of Agent Orange. Agent Orange was an herbicide used in the Vietnam War by South Vietnam and the United States to try to get rid of the jungle in which the Vietcong used as cover. Unfortunately, the herbicide contained an extremely dangerous and potent compound 2,3,7,8, - tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), or commonly referred to as just dioxin (Herbicides). TCDD has caused many ill effects in people who have been exposed to it, and it was not only until years after the widespread use in the war that it was discovered to be exceedingly dangerous.…
Evaluate the detrimental effects of chemical and biological contaminates on human health and the environment.…
Today’s pesticides have been designed to kill living organisms; this is why the persistent ones can be very harmful to the environment and our health. These pesticides can even contaminate our food, air, and water. In addition, synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of fossil fuel to produce. They can even contribute to air quality, such as acid rain when pesticides evaporate, and soil degradation.…
The purpose of this course is to provide the fundamental knowledge of the effects of environmental chemicals on living systems, and the toxic responses of the human and plant systems. Students will discuss risk, ethics, and social responsibility with regard to environmental toxicology.…
The anatomy of the animals is changing because of these chemicals. We have frogs being born with six legs and male frogs with female organs and all of those sort of mishaps because these animals are being subjected to very dangerous deadly chemicals. This is cutting off the whole food chain because as the animals feed each other the chemicals are killing even the button nose whales which are at the top of the food chain.…
Chlorine is a halogen abundant in the natural environment, typically found in the form of ionic chloride compounds. Once isolated into its elemental form, chlorine has a high oxidising potential, resulting in its use as a water disinfectant globally. Although water chlorination has significantly improved public health, recent studies suggest a correlation between the consumption of chlorinated water and an increased risk of certain cancers, leading to the question: “Should the chlorination of water be banned in Australia?"…
The third chapter of Carson’s book explains in details the elixirs of death that is, what these chemicals such as DDT and arsenic are and how they eventually gain the magical powers of causing death by spreading through the entire food chain of our ecosystem and giving rise to many fatal diseases like cancer.…
During recent years, numerous newspaper and magazine articles have suggested that humans may be at risk because small amounts of well known environmental contaminants, such as dioxin, PCBs and DDT, can affect hormone levels. Hormones are produced by the endocrine system as regulators of biological function in target organs. Because hormones play a critical role in early development, toxicological effects on the endocrine system often have an impact on the reproductive system. The term endocrine disruptor is used to describe chemicals that can mimic hormones and may either enhance or counteract their effects. It has been suggested that these hormone changes can, in turn, lead to a variety of health problems including cancer, decreased fertility, and abnormalities in newborns.…
Michael Pollan writes about the three ecological consequences of synthetic fertilizers. The first consequence is the contamination of drinking water caused by synthetic fertilizers. The second consequence is the overflow of the fertilizers to the ocean and forest. The third consequence is the “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico created causing the death of a huge amount of living organisms. The three consequences are not anything beneficiary to earth, they are instead disasters. Similarly, Rachel Carson mentions the negative effect pesticides have brought to the environment. Carson wrote, “ …, the central problem of our age has therefore become the contamination of man’s total environment with such substances of incredible potential for harm, …”(8). She suggests to be cautious about the direct impact of pesticides on human. Both Michael Pollan and Rachel Carson are aware of the harmful effect of the human-made chemicals. Despite the fact that the two objects are completely different, they still are harmful to the well-being of all organisms living on…
Waters in the U.S still possess high levels of DDT contamination. This shows that the pesticide is still found with high levels in fish caught near Los Angeles area. It is also told that it’s associated with increase risk of liver cancer, and affect the human reproductive and nervous systems, and toxic to many animals, specially aquatic life. All this means that the amount of DDT in fish has not decreased by the last years. It concludes with how many companies have released a large quantity of DDT in water systems.…
