Musical stimuli that are familiar to Indian inhabitants would yield a better task performance instead of using a controlled musical stimulus, as emotion is subjective. A pilot study was conducted on eight healthy participants to identify which type of music (carnatic, hard rock and jazz) enhances the cognitive skills and reduces the mental stress of an individual in listening of music by using electroencephalography(Eight healthy right handed subjects without special musical education participated in the study. EEG signal were recorded while listening music during cognitive task from three characteristic locations (FZ, PZ and CZ) on the cranium using surface electrodes. Signal were analyzed in frequency domain and seven feature were extracted from three brain rhythms (theta, alpha and beta) while listening to three different music. At Cz location the total power was significantly (p < 0.05) high in the Rock as compared to Jazz music and between Carnatic and Jazz, total power was significantly (p < 0.05) high for Carnatic when compared to Jazz. The study concludes, Jazz music reduces mental stress and increase attention during cognitive task as compare to Carnatic, hard …show more content…

Fifty five subjects participated in the experiment (20 Males, 20 Females, and 15 Classical dancers). In this present study, a distinct attempt has been made by including the classical dancers among the group of participants. The perceived emotions are recorded in three dimensional spaces (valence, arousal, and dominance domain) for the Indian subjects using Self-Assessment Manikin Scale (SAM). The male perceived the pleasant pictures in valence space as pleased and in arousal space it was excited (rs =0.511) in dominance space as dependant (rs =0.301). while female (rs =0.405) and classical dancers (rs =0.551) perceived the pleasant pictures in valence space as pleasant and in arousal space it was excited, as well as in dominance space as dependant (rs =0.202) , (rs =0.210).The unpleasant pictures were rated as unpleasant by all in valance space whereas in arousal space female and male rated in arousal space rated as was dull (rs =0.222) and classical dancers as wide awake (rs =0.480).whereas female (rs =0.170) and classical dancers (rs =0.332) rated dependant in dominance space .The neutral

In the text “Is music a good tool for health?” by Elizabeth Scott, the author explains how research has demonstrated the positive effects of music on bodies and minds. Nowadays there are many new programs in health care facilities that use music therapy, which uses music in form of therapy to heal people. The use of this method has been successful that even hospitals have started to use music therapy on some of their patients, who develop problems with depression, muscle tension, stress and to motivate them. Researchers have found that music beats send stimulating waves to the brain and by increasing and decreasing the beats they can control people’s emotions. A strong beat will keep you alert and a slow one will calm you down. Because music can control your heart rate, your body automatically experiences relief, and that’s why music and music therapy prevent and relieve stress and anxiety disorders.…

A functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) conducted by Bigliassi, León-Dominguez, and Altimari. This study was conducted in a laboratory. Thirty subjects participated in the study: 15 men and 15 women. The aim of the study was to explore the effects of techno and classical music on emotional reactions and brain activity. ANOVA results showed statistical significance: both musical genres increase prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity. However, after conducting a post hoc test, analysis indicated that classical music caused grater activity in the dorsolateral region. Moreover, classical music was able to increase parasympathetic activity, while techno music decreased parasympathetic activity after 10 minutes of music exposure. Analysis also showed that men were more affected by classical music than women, (Bigliassi, León-Domínguez, & Altimari,…

Serotonin largely influences learning patterns and mood. It is commonly used in anti-depressant medications. Dopamine is a chemical substance that, when released in the brain, creates a feel-good state. It is released when listening to music, eating sweets, doing cocaine, and being in love. When we listen to music, it is processed in many different areas of the brain. The extent of the brain's involvement was hardly known until the early nineties, when a functional brain imaging became possible. Once the sound has traveled to the rest of the brain it starts its course through it. This is the real issue though, because scholars find it very hard to precisely pick out the pattern of how music travels through the brain. On the other hand, there are key spots that are noticeably influenced such as: corpus callosum, which separates the brain hemispheres and the functions of the brain. The motor and sensory cortex, where movement and sensory functions are stored. The most important parts however that are influenced are the amygdala,…
