COPD:
A lot of people think lung cancer is the biggest issue when it comes to the effects of smoking but COPD is more rampant (and poorer in diagnosis).But then,what is COPD? Wikipedia says,
COPD stands for Chronic obstructive Pulmonary Disease and “is the co-occurrence of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, a pair of commonly co-existing diseases of the lungs in which the airways become narrowed. This leads to a limitation of the flow of air to and from the lungs, causing shortness of breath.” Simply put,COPD patients find it hard to breathe.
Lung Cancer:
A research conducted in the UK identified “Smoking as the single biggest cause of cancer in the world, and accounts for one in four UK cancer deaths. In the UK, smoking kills five times more people than road accidents, overdoses, murder, suicide and HIV all put together.” This is really startling and your jaw begins to drop when you learn that the situation is no different in the US.
According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States; this equaled about 443,000 early deaths each year from 2000 to 2004. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011).
