An essay on the effects of the moon on the earth, life, humanity and modern society.
“Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise”, writes Maya Angelou in 1978, believing in the certainty of the moon spinning endlessly around the earth, giving us light in the darkest of times. Could you even imagine a world without a moon? A world in which the black of night would only be interrupted by countless stars, the sun would be doomed to rise and shine on its own and the earth would be a lonely rocky planet only surrounded by celestial bodies to far away to see with human eyes.

Both are kind and take turns in helping people. One day they drown in a treacherous river. Their bodies morph into 2 shining globes, one silver and one gold and from now on, they will take turns guarding the sky. Still helping people, always finding the light in the darkness.
A myth of Luyia-tribe in Kenia depicts the sun and the moon as brothers. The moon was originally stronger, older and brighter making the sun jealous resulting in him attacking his older brother. The moon fell into the mud and lost a part of his fiercely shining light. ‘God’ made it stop and ordered the sun to shine during the day and the moon to shine during the night.
The actual story of the origin of the moon is much less beautiful. According to the giant impact hypothesis (1975) the earth came into collision with planet Theia around 4 to 4.5 billion years ago, which caused a giant matter to be blasted into space. Due to Earth’s gravity, this substance came into an orbit spinning around the Earth. Later on the Moons infamous craters were formed as a result of several meteorites.

We have always shifted between 23 and 26 degrees on a maximum, which is quite stable when compared to other planets. Take Mars, whose axial tilt can differentiate up to 35 degrees. Imagine the earth as Mercury having no seasons due to the fact that it orbits in the same plane as its rotation around the sun or imagine the earth as Uranus, having an axial tilt so large that we cannot even fathom that level of extreme weather. Our relatively moderate axial tilt ensures a gradual system of different climatic zones. The reason that life developed on earth is due to very specific ingredients as well as goldilocks conditions, change those conditions by hypothetically removing a big factor such as the moon and life would possibly not
