Creation stories are crucial to society! No matter what culture or religion, it gives us a sense of belonging, a sense of knowing where we started. Even if it is considered a “myth” for the people who identify with that culture or religion, it gives them a sense of relief, and comfort on how they got here on this planet. In order to have individuality and uniqueness our stories have to be different.
The creation stories we have been studying are different in so many ways. For instance, the Egyptians and the Babylonians both serve multiple gods, and in both of the Hebrew and the Babylonian stories there was nothing in the beginning, but the Egyptians had water at the beginning. Also, both the Babylonians and the Hebrews believed that sacrifices have to be made in order for others to be blessed. Both the Babylonian and Hebrew stories had their God/ god speak things into creation. On the third day both the Egyptians and hebrew gods/ God made the earth. The Egyptian Creation Epic says “Shu and Tefnut produced Geb,the Earth, and Nut, the Sky ”(9). In the Egyptian Creation Epic, humans are made to serve gods and are rewarded with their love and protection. “As the men populated the earth they had to uphold the truth and balance of Maat. They had the task of tending the earth and worshipping the gods. The gods, in turn, protected and loved their creations.” Meanwhile, a little further down in tablet VI of Enuma Elish it says “He shall be charged with service of the gods that they might be at ease!” (8-9).
