In the article “The Enchanted Bylanes”, Avantika Bhuyan expresses that if you are willing to go through hundreds of people and cattle, you will find India’s largest wholesale market toys. The market provides consumers with the latest toys children will enjoy. The toys Indian market provides are toys from China. "The Charmer" written by Budge Wilson is a short story about a family that finds misfortune and conflicts in their lives. Conflict is most predominant which directly affects all members in the family. This story is remarkable in the sense of loss, morality and love, it is the story of how a young girl; Winifred comes to realize that her brother is nothing more than a charmer. Budge Wilson portrays Zachary's irresponsible behaviour to create emotional conflict between the family. Zack's mother and sisters love him dearly especially Winifred is no exception; the love for Zack is shown by the extraction. In addition, Zachary's true colours proves himself to be a whole different person. Furthermore, an example from the story that shows how Zachary avoids his mischievous behaviour on page 102, "Then my mother would laugh, we’d all laugh, and Mom would mix up the batter for the new cake, a smile playing upon her lips. “Go ahead!” she’d say, with a fake sigh. “Have another piece. You certainly are the limit!” (Wilson,102). This quote shows from this young age Zack is taught that he could do something knowing he should not stand a very good chance of getting away with it. It demonstrates that although Zack's behaviour is inadequate, the lack of discipline from his parents flares a level of irresponsibility and the struggle affects Zack…

2.) My assessment of the process Spin Masters has used to get to this point is, they are really good at developing good relationships with retailers, investors and have in-depth knowledge of research and development of various toys. Spin Masters has expertise in developing low technology “fad” toys and distributing them to retailers quickly. Spin Masters lacks engineering and manufacturing capabilities and therefore it’s necessary to outsource both. The company used their own “grassroots marketing” campaigns to stimulate interest in their toys.…

Walking through almost any toy store today, the first thing to be noticed would be that there are two main sections. One, displaying an immense amount of colors from pink, yellow, to purple. Glitter and frill were not absent among this section that held children’s toys ranging from dolls, stuffed animals, plastic play houses with kitchens as well as telephones, and common feminine characters scene on young television channels. Looking at the bikes or toy motor cars here, the same color variations appear only along with streamers and prominent words such as “princess” or “sparkle”. Looking more closely at the toy dolls, there is a very common attribute in almost every one having blonde hair, blue eyes, and large breasts. These can be found more often then dolls portraying ethnicity of African American or Hispanic denomination. Stuffed animals are often seen with name tags such as “Candy” or using the prefix of “Miss” before their…

Beanie Baby phenomenon has really opened a lot of eyes in the toys industry, especially, because this phenomenon was sustained in an industry that is known to be very turbulent based on the fact that, there are a lot of substitutes that come into the industry everyday, moreover, the excitement that these toys create, only can last for a short period of time as buyers in this market (usually children) tend to have an inconsistent buying behaviour and unpredictable majority of the time. This was not the case for Beanie Babies.…

Inside Toyland, written by Christine L. Williams, is a look into toy stores and the race, class, and gender issues. Williams worked about six weeks at two toy stores, Diamond Toys and Toy Warehouse, long enough to be able to detect patterns in store operations and the interactions between the workers and the costumers. She wanted to attempt to describe and analyze the rules that govern giant toy stores. Her main goal was to understand how shopping was socially organized and how it might be transformed to enhance the lives of workers. During the twentieth century, toy stores became bigger and helped suburbanization and deregulation. Specialty toy stores existed but sold mainly to adults, not to children. Men used to be the workers at toy stores until it changed and became feminized, racially mixed, part time, and temporary. As box stores came and conquered the land, toy stores started catering to children and offering larger selections at low prices. The box stores became powerful in the flip-flop of the power going from manufacturers to the retailers. Now, the retail giants determine what they will sell and at what price they will sell it.…

Finally, the objects described above are the end result of a process through which value is socially ascribed to the inanimate. Igor Kopytoff (1986) defines this process in modern nations as a tension between culturally ascribed and individually determined value, which takes into account the degree to which something is unique. Returning to Marina’s Happy Meal toys helps to illuminate this process. Firstly, McDonald’s toys are mass produced from widely-available materials. Culturally, this detracts from their value, unless they are in some way flawed enough to be unique. Low social value is exactly why they are so meaningful to Marina, however, who subverts her parents’ professed fondness for status items. She also find them “sacred” (Kopytoff,…

On Sept 12, 2007, members of Congress, their staff, reporters, and the general public were all gathered in a U.S. Senate hearing room to discuss the issue of toy safety, how to make it better and improve it (Anne T Lawrence, 2008). What brought about the hearing was the Mattel Company, who is known as one of the “world’s premier toy companies” and was the Global leader in the design, manufacture, and marketing of toys along with other family products had ordered a series of recalls of toys and other children’s playthings. Mattel manufactures over 800 million toys annually. They began their business in Southern California in a garage workshop manufacturing picture frames and eventually the company started selling dollhouse furniture made from their picture frame scraps and when they realized the market potential they switched their business over to manufacturing toys. In 1959 Mattel created their most famous and popular toy, the Barbie Doll. The toy was considered a doll with which little girls could play out their dreams. Throughout the history of the company Mattel has continued to create and market popular toys such as Hot Wheels and Match Box. They have also merged with successful manufacturers (Fisher Price and Tyco), they also became partners with children’s program companies (Disney, Sesame Street, and Nickelodeon), obtained rights to manufacture popular product lines (Cabbage Patch, American Girl Dolls, Fisher Price and Harry Potter merchandise) and expanded their business by acquiring other companies like (The Pleasant Company).…

The street vendor figure HN1316 Toys (Fig. 98), is unusual in that it is both satirical and amusing. The subject, a female toy seller is offering for sale, which may be described in modern parlance, a tray of toy-boys or at the very least some young men. The figure Toys, it would seem, was produced in just the one colour way, and was withdrawn from production by 1938. Doulton also promoted in 1929, Harradine’s HN1359 Two-a-Penny (Fig. 99). Doubtless, this figure is doubtless a subtle variation in modelling of HN1316 Toys. It is an identical colour way, with the red and greens decorating the tray. However, in this guise the subject is selling not beaux, but rather buttons and bows, for the said two-a-penny, it was also withdrawn by 1938. A third figure was titled HN1325 The Orange Seller (Fig. 100). Although not a distinguished piece of modelling by Harradine, it has proved the more successful on its own merits and has remained in production for some twenty years, and discontinued in 1949. HN1325 The Orange Seller was marketed as a pair with HN1339 Covent Garden (Fig. 101). Both of these figures were decorated in a colour edition of predominately green with lilac aprons or bodice. The latter figure, Covent Garden at 9 inches high is some 2 inches taller than The Orange Seller, subsequently proved not to be a great commercial success, and difficult from a manufacturing point of view, possibly because of the additional weight supported by the subject’s slender neck, by 1938, it had been…

The Chinese Toy Manufactures are companies that use economy of scale in order to provide its clients with low cost products; they can achieve this due to inexpensive material, work labor and taxes. These companies operate with low margins of profit, so any pressure among any of their variables affects the business model. It is a common practice for these companies to subcontract to other companies in order to meet productions deadlines and to constantly look for better prices in the input materials in order to maximize their profits; this practice open the door for quality issues not only in the toys industry but in pet food, tires and tooth paste they all suffer from recalls between 2006 and 2007.…
