Throughout the Colonial Latin American history labor regimes changed over time affecting many indigenous people as well as Africans. Indigenous people were forced by the Spaniards to work their land that led them to discover gold and other resources that were able to generate large profits and benefits to the economy in Spain. In the other hand , Africans were forced by the Portuguese to do labor and they contribute to the economic drove in Brazil since they were able to produce sugar. Labor was an advantage to the colonial projects in the Americas because it attributed to the economic growth of Iberian Crowns. It also allowed the Spanish to demand labor from the Indians, which worked in their lands, gold mines and they also pay the encomenderos tribute (Martin, and Wasserman 93). This encomienda system was a symbolization of the indigenous people exploitation and oppression (Martin, and Wasserman 93). The encomenderos were in charge of the indigenous people, making them work hard in order to find the resources needed, and they even got tributes from the Indians, and they knew how to get profits off of them (Martin, and Wasserman 99). As Conrad explained in his writings, slaves underwent cruel punishments, depending on their skin color and were the came from. Africans slaves were severely punished by their masters, and they were treated like if they were animals. People of African descent did not resist colonial systems, and they run away to escape the harsh treatment they were facing at that time (Conrad 59). Many of African slaves were living in fear of being killed by their masters, some of them rebel but many of them such as the rural slaves were able to wait and make some money to buy their freedom (Conrad 61). Those who did not rebel fear their master and the consequences of the punishments they were going to receive (Conrad 61). Religion for example, was a factor because slaves believe if they rebel they were going to hell. Another factor was hegemony of the Iberians over the slaves, because slaves believe they beneath the Europeans in some way (Conrad

Sugar cultivating took over the plantations in the New World; farmers began to convert most of their lands to sugar cane. This meant more workers were needed to work on these fields. These jobs were very labor-intensive so they first brought in the indentured servants. These servants were unable to adapt to the harsh tropical climate and the hard work discouraged them. It wasn’t much later when they decided to bring in the African slaves. As these slaves were owned by them, they forced them to do these vigorous jobs.…

Due to differences in religious beliefs, many people were taken as slaves. As stated in Document B, those who didn’t practice Christianity in their place of origin had a right to be enslaved by the colonists. In addition to that, slaves were declared property of owners. If they were to deny the orders of their master, they could be killed without any punishment to the owners due to “accidental” reasoning (Doc B). In fact, the slave owners thought they were doing the slaves a favor by having them convert to Christianity. John Saffin in Document G, can be quoted as saying because the African slaves converted to Christianity, they became “eternally saved”. Slavery was also hereditary based in places such as Virginia, which was another social factor because people who were related were automatically included into the slavery system. Slaves were declared property by the state of Virginia in 1705 and were allowed to be inherited and killed by “necessary” means, such as revolting against or trying to liberate from slaveowners (Doc C). To conclude, religion and heredity were both major social factors that contributed to enslaving people of various…

It is important to understand the fundamental difference between these two systems. The Encomienda system was where conquistadors were given rights over the native people they conquered. While technically the native people owned their land still, Spanish were given charge of them. Part of the reason for this was that the Spanish could protect the Native people they were charged with from other warring tribes. A big part of this was also to teach the Native people the Spanish language and educate them in Christianity with the goal on converting them. Since the Spanish who were given the land grants did not own the land, it was expected that the people of the land pay tribute to the Spanish.…

The European’s saw the Africans as something so vile and so putrid that they decided to punish them. After capturing some of these Africans and enslaving them, the Europeans sent them over to the Americas and forced them to complete manual labor. On the way to the Americas, the Africans often died in the process of trying to become immune to European diseases; the Europeans would force these diseases onto them in order to make the rest of the population immune. On the way to and in America, the slaves were harshly beaten and were wrongly treated for the reason that they looked differently than the Europeans did. One effect of the expansion of Europeans was various unsuccessful labor systems in the Americas, Antonio Vazquez de Espinosa, a Spanish missionary, expressed his opinion about the corrupt Mita system that dictated the labor force at the Potosi mines in Peru, 1622. " This works out very badly, with great losses and gaps in the quota of Indians, the villages being depopulated; and this gives rise to great extortions and abuses on the part of the inspectors toward the poor Indians." Espinosa describes the losses from the elected Indian representatives that created gaps in the Spanish's expectation of tributary labor and silver production guaranteed by the Indians.…

To fulfill their need in human labor, they began to bring in Africans to work for them. Moreover, the Spanish needed more workers due to the discovery of more mines; therefore, a contract called the asiento was created. This allowed over 220,000 African slaves to be imported to the Spanish colonies as slaves during a span of 50 years. Because of these events, it inspired other countries to take part in using Africans for labor. For instance, enslaved Africans were working on sugar…

The first type of labor that was used in the British Americas was indentured servitude. An indentured servant became one by agreeing with an employer to take them to New World in exchange for 5-7 years of labor. The benefit for a colonial employer were that they were cheap, especially compared to its future counterpart; that was pretty much the only real big benefit of having an indentured slave. However, the disadvantages were quite numerous. For example, they were European, so they had to be treated with respect and decency. Moreover, he had to feed them, clothe them, and give them shelter. Also, after they served out their contract, they were let to go free with 50 acres of land that the employer had to provide, which cause for further financial losses. Furthermore, the employer also had to keep in mind that anywhere from 25-40% of the indentured servants didn’t finish off their contract because they died.…

The Spanish labor systems of encomienda and repartimiento were not entirely successful because the Crown did not fully approve of them or did so grudgingly. However they were more strongly enforced and most if not all the Spaniards used them. The Portuguese aldeia system resembled a combination of the encomienda and repartimiento. Like the encomeinda Indians were introduced to Christianity and European way of life in exchange for a portion of their labor which was in turn given to the church or the state. Like the repartimiento land owners could apply to the administrators for paid Indian workers to perform a specific…

In 1494, Queen Isabella sent out and edict saying that “Indians have souls” therefore, it is the duty as a conquistador to save them. As a result, an encomienda system was established in 1512 by Fray Nicolas de Ovando. The encomienda system regulated Native labour and behavior during Spanish colonization. In exchange, the encomenderos were to take responsibility for the Natives via converting to the Christian faith, protect them from warring tribes and pirates, as well as educate the Natives the Spanish language and infrastructure. The Natives would give tributes to the encomenderos in the form of metals, maize (corn), wheat, pork, and several other agricultural products. By 1730, the system was formally abolished; however, the system lost its effectiveness much earlier…

Punishment played a giant role in slave life. It showed the consequences of not doing what was asked or disobeying their master thus instilling fear in every single slave the owner possessed. Charity Anderson recalls, "But honey chile, all white folks warn 't good to dere slaves, cause I'se seen poe niggas almos' to'e up by dogs, and whipped unmercifully, when dey did'nt do lack de white folks say." Mary Reynolds remembers, "I seed them put the men and women in the stock with they hands screwed down through holes in the board and they feets tied together and they naked behinds to the world. Solomon the [sic] overseer beat them with a big whip and massa look on. The niggers better not stop in the fields when they hear them yellin'. They cut the flesh most to the bones and some they was when they taken them out of stock and put them on the beds, they never got up again." These two accounts show just what these poor slaves had to deal with. They were constantly watched, and felt that if they just as much as gave a superior a wrong look, they would be beaten, or even worse, killed.…
