I do not believe that slavery ended in 1865, or that it has yet to end today. In 1865, the thirteenth amendment was passed it stated that slaver and involuntary servitude were illegal. While slavery may be deemed as illegal, it still occurs in our modern times, just as it did in the 1800s. This can be seen across our time in exampled such as how blacks were not allowed to vote even after emancipated, triangle shirtwaist company fire, and the way in which we treat those in other countries who are employeed by American companies today.
Fredrick douglass himself said after African americans gained freedom, that they were not yet free until they had a say on the ballot. America was said to be a democracy, where all had a say in their country. However, refusing to give blacks the right to vote showed that they were still thought of as inferior compared to whites. Yet black could still fight a battle for his country as a white man could. What gave whites the right to determine the fate of our country, and blacks only the right to fight for it? Slavery is being forced to do something without a say in it for yourself. African americans were not given a say in what was happening in their government, only whites. This can be seen as slavery, as yet again, whites determined the lives of black without giving them a voice. In 1869, when blacks were finally given the right to vote, slavery still ensued. African americans were made to take literacy tests and pay poll taxes. By forcing them to pay poll taxes in order to vote, whites were collecting money off of the actions of a black man, much like when they were enslaved. It was more than 50 years after blacks were given the right to vote that they could do so without being prevented by white men without having unfair stipulations.
The triangle shirtwaist fire of 1911 is also a prime example of how slavery did not end with the thirteenth amendment in 1865. Located in new York city
