The ENIAC Story: Historical Account of the Creation of the World's First Electronic Digital Computer
Supplemental Reading Worksheet #1
The ENIAC Story – By Martin H. Weik, 1961 (web article)
Steve Wozniak - Gnomedex Presentation (.mp3 audio)
The ‘ENIAC Story’ is a historical account of the creation of the world’s first electronic digital computer. The intent of this reading is to provide some historical context to understanding today’s information systems. There are so many interesting stories and events that we could read about – but where it all began is probably as good as any place to get started. Some of us are old enough to remember when the first Personal Computers appeared in the mid 1970s, I bought my first computer in 1980 for $309 (I still have it and can’t bring myself to throw it out – despite my wife’s nagging). It was infinitely more powerful and useful than the ENIAC. My uncle paid nearly $70,000 to buy a mini-computer for his hospital billing business just 10 years earlier.
Some of you may be old enough to remember the days of paper tape and punch-cards before
Personal Computers. Most of you however, I suspect have grown up with Personal Computers and many of you don’t remember a time before Internet – for you it is nearly impossible to imagine a world with out Personal Computers. But here’s a thought – never mind before
Personal Computers. What about before ENIAC (BE). Can you imagine running a financial institution like a bank without computers? What about the stock market – was there really a stock market before computers? http://ftp.arl.mil/~mike/comphist/eniac-story.html Mirror Link – With Photo! http://www.uwgb.edu/breznayp/cs353/eniac.html 1. What profound historical event led to the creation of the world’s first electronic digital computer – ENIAC? What does the abbreviation ENIAC refer to?

2. The initial contract for ENIAC was for $67,000. By 1946 how much had actually been spent? 3. Before ENIAC the most powerful numeric calculating device was the Bush differential analyzer. What was the most significant and severe limitation of this

I graduated high school in 1998 and joined the Air Force in dreams of being like my father. Due to my color vision I wasn’t able to work on computers but I was able to buy my own computer in 2001 or 2002. Dell sent me my first window into the digital world. This Dell was a cheap $1500. What hardware it had, I don’t even remember. When I got the computer, it was all based on price. The computer had Windows 98 with Word and to tell you the truth, I didn’t even use the computer that often. Just to look something up on the World Wide Web or to write a paper for work.…

The IBM 5100 Portable Computer was introduced in 1975, weighed 25 kg (55 lb), was the size of a small suitcase and needed external power to operate. It held everything in the same unit, packing in a processor, ROM (several hundreds of KB) and RAM (16-64 KB), a five-inch CRT display, keyboard and a tape drive, which was an amazing feat at the time. It also came with built-in BASIC and/or APL. The different models of the IBM 5100 sold for $8,975 – $19,975.…

In a sense computers have been around for centuries. The abacus, a counting machine, was invented by the Chinese sometime between 500 and 400 BC. The numeral zero was first recognized and written by Hindu's in 650 AD, without which written calculations would be impossible. In 1623 the great grandfather of the processor was born, the calculating clock. Wilhelm Schickard of Germany invented this adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing machine based on the principle of algorithms. For the next three hundred years or so various machines were invented which could perform calculations but none were any vast improvement over Shickard's clock, perhaps with the exception of Babbage's punch card machine in 1832 (it was never finished).…

The first computer that I bought was a new Packard Bell 486 with windows 3.1 and a Cannon bubble jet. It was more troublesome to use and I was not computer literate and I had no ideal what I had but I had a computer in my home. I was asked prior to buying the computer what I wanted put on it my answer was whatever it comes with and I had no idea what to use so the guy put some programs on it and I took it home and was in business. I would do little things at first just to try and get a feel for this thing but it would amaze me or frustrate me. I had this thing and did not know what to do with it at times I felt like throwing it out the window. The more I tried reading the book the more I got confused and I had no patience with this technology. I looked through several different computer books and that did not help. So I finally gave up on computers and left them alone for several years.…
