This paper discusses the impact that family violence, has on individuals in families irrespective of the victims age or gender. Statistically, when society addressed the issue of family abuse, it was naturally assumed that the violent abusive behavior was committed by the male family member. He was always the culprit in administering punishment that bordered on, and often escalated into abusive situations. However, in recent years society has experienced a definite shift in those statistics. Some reasons for this decline and or shift may be a direct result of men coming forth and revealing the truth about the abuse they endured at the hands of their wife or significant other. The “blowup” may be mild or severe and may last a few minutes or several days. It may include slamming doors, throwing things, and destroying property, slapping, pushing, kicking, name-calling, or the use of a weapon. This phase is followed by the “Honeymoon” phase. During the Honeymoon Phase the abuser is often apologetic and attempts to make excuses for his behavior and may make promises to change, seek counseling. It is during this phase that the woman glimpses the man she fell in love with. A cycle may initially span over a year or more and or could be a daily occurrence. As time goes on, the honeymoon phase may drop entirely only leaving a cycle of tension and battering. She may begin to believe the things he tells her are true. Law enforcement, Prosecutors frequently failed to take the complaints of battered women seriously and sent women home with advice that they should kiss and make up (Gelles p.145) Statistics show that law enforcement keep very poor records of domestic violence incidents. Others think that self-blame may contribute to long-term depression. There is insufficient evidence to assume that self-blame is wide spread among survivors. With thoughts stipulated as being the cause of emotion rather than vice-versa, cognitive therapist reverse the casual order more generally used by psychotherapist. Therefore the therapy is to identify those irrational or maladaptive thoughts that lead to negative emotion and identify what it is about them that is irrational or just not helpful; this is done in a effort to reject the distorted thoughts and replace them with more realistic alternative
