Columnist, Molly Ivins with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram writes in her (March 15, 1993) “Taking A Stab At Our Infatuation with Guns” article about the hypocrisy of gun ownership in our nation and emphasizes the unnecessary possession of guns by providing alternatives to guns. Ivins supports her claim by first using sarcasm by mocking the circumstances her points apply to; second she argues that guns in fact are to kill and nothing else and finally, society is NOT trained, disciplined militias thus cannot handle guns. Molly Ivins’ Op Ed is to persuade the Texas based readers and the entire nation that guns do not protect, guns kill. Ivins emphasizes a candid and demanding tone to stress the absurdity of the lack…
+There is pleasure to be had in exercising one’s rights, learning something new in midlife and mastering the operation of a complex tool, which is one thing a gun is. (pathos-freedom) But I won’t deny the seductive psychological power that firearms possess. I grew up playing shooting games, pretending to be Starsky or Hutch or one of the patrolmen on “Adam-12,” the two most boring TV cops in history.…
“Gun control? We need bullet control! I think every bullet should cost $5,000. Because if a bullet cost $5,000, we wouldn’t have any innocent bystanders.” (Rock, 1999) Chris Rock got a big laugh when he expressed his comical stance on the issues with guns. With the heart-wrenching reality of the Virginia Tech massacre, the issue of whether or not guns should be allowed on college campus has returned to the forefront of debates, and this is no longer a laughing matter. The country is torn between Gun right activist who are for the right to bear arms on campuses, and those who feel the same “rights-to-bear-arms” are the reason these college gun-crimes exist. It is important to know what is stated in the Second Amendment how the rights of the people are affected. In addition, the reader will learn about the two grass roots organizations on polar ends of the debates: the N.R.A. and the Brady Campaign. Are guns and schools politically ethical or social no-no’s? The question that is on everyone’s mind is how schools can become safer. Cops-in-class may be a theory that may help promote safer college campuses throughout the United States. The conclusion of this paper will contain the Author’s disposition on the unrelenting issue: should guns be allowed on college campuses?…
After the shooting at Sandy Hook, the controversy of gun laws began to erupt. However, not only was this debated over in Connecticut, but it influenced other states as well. New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo has agreed to take control of the situation and have a tighter hand on gun control laws (Doc D) .Guns are not only used for work or jobs like a police officer, but are also used as a sport for fun. Paint ball rifles, airsoft guns, and the most talked about video games have just some of the few types of guns used in sports or leisure activity. Lott suggests that guns have the consequences “of making mass shootings more likely” (Doc A). He also states that these types of attacks almost always happen where guns are banned. Angry and frustrated families believe that fewer guns equal less shootings or crimes. Some people such as gun owners see guns as the answer to the problem of violence, and they firmly defend their belief on how these weapons are beneficial. They feel as if they are under pressure with new gun control being underway and that their “Second Amendment rights will be taken away” (Doc A).…
On December 15, 2012, in the wake of devastating firing at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Shannon Watts founded an organization called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (Web). The organization runs a grassroots awareness campaign aiming to decrease the escalating gun violence. They have launched several ads among them the given ad ‘choose one’ advocates the child’s safety and the abuse of guns. In order to resonate the gun violence in school the background of this ad is a classroom with desks and chairs, whiteboard, and other academic materials. By using ordinary classroom and kids with simple cloths, the advertiser pathetically connects the ad with viewer’s emotion. In fact, the setting gives strength to its theme of making people alert of potential dangers to children of guns at school and also helps to relate the issue to the general parents, families and the communities. The ad sarcastically depicts that the use of gun in America is more legitimate than eating kinder egg chocolate because it is commonplace for an individual to carry gun in America, however the ad uses a young girl, which is an exaggeration of a real situation.…
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” reflects on Youngers, an African-American Family, who lived on the southern side of Chicago in the late 1950s. The play opens with the family receiving a $10,000 insurance check from Mr. Younger’s (the deceased) life insurance policy. Each member of the family is ready with an idea of what to use the money on (Hansberry, 11). For example, Mama has a dream of buying a house. On the other hand, Walter Lee who is Mama’s Son wants to invest in a Liquor store with his neighborhood friends. To him, investment is the only solution to saving the family from financial challenges (Hansberry, 12). Variously, Beneatha who is Lee’s Sister wishes to use the funds as…
Gary Younge’s article “Gun Ownership is a Dangerous Part of the American Identity”, states that the main source of the country’s gun complications stem from our unbelievable sense of pride, of self-power, freedom, and masculinity. Gun-related deaths are on the rise because of suicide, mass shootings involving drug and gang violence on the streets or in schools, accidental shootings caused by ignorant young children with irresponsible parents in charge, along with various other situations that result in death by a gun. Lowering the death rate caused by firearms is a simple but onerous task that we can accomplish if only we were to drop the mindset that ‘guns don’t kill people, people…

According to Lepore (2012), “In 1973, there were guns in roughly one in two households in the United States; in 2010, one in three. In 1980, nearly one in three Americans owned a gun; in 2010, that figure had dropped to one in five” (Battle Ground America). The number one reason for owning a gun is for protection. It does not matter whether it is for self-defense, protecting family and friends, or your property. Being able to defend yourself from an aggressor can be the difference between…
On April 16, 2007, Seung Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA in two separate attacks about two hours apart (Mass Shootings at Virginia Tech, 2007; Worth, 2008). Those shots were heard around the world as people tried to grasp one of the deadliest murders in United States history. The Department of Educational Statistics shows that crimes on college campuses exist. Crimes include, but are not limited to, murder, rape, robbery, and assault. It is essential that individuals can feel safe as they are gaining their education. It is interesting that after the Virginia Tech massacre, people were advocating tighter restrictions on gun laws. This is inappropriate, as the problem at hand was not the guns themselves, but rather the mentally ill individual using the guns. Since when do criminal respect gun laws! Perhaps by allowing students and professors to carry weapons, the Virginia Tech massacre could have been diminished and addressed more quickly had students and/or professors been permitted to carry concealed weapons. Permitting concealed weapons could better ensure safety on college and university campuses.…
Many families do not keep their guns in safe places that children couldn’t reach. For example, in South Carolina a 2-year-old shot his grandmother in the back while she was riding in the back seat of the car the child found the gun in the back of the front seat and shot his grandmother. Since children don’t know the concept of killing and harming people they have injured and killed many people, even children have killed their own parents and siblings. For example, a child shot his father in an event where many people were present. These kinds of incidents have happened many times because the parents didn't pay attention to the consequences of keeping guns. Not keeping guns in a safe place where children can't reach can result in familie’s own…

(Eight Men 156) “The gun” represents “power, masculinity, respect and independence” (Web) everything Dave is hoping for, to become a man. Dave’s parents are “threats and exploiters,” of this desired manhood and this is reason enough to defy and cut the emotional ties of family, as limited as they are (Resource Center 3). Dave has no social or community black male roll models or ties. “Niggers can’t understand nothing” (Wright 69). The [miscellaneous] “field hands” are negative roll models, they taunt and make fun of Dave “ [talkin] to him [lika] little boy” (Wright 69) concerning something that they neither understand nor have themselves; a since of…
We would agree that home safety is in the minds of most Americans, but no matter how hard we try to protect our homes it’s not always a realistic fact. According to fbi.gov, nationwide in 2010, there were an estimated 367,832 robberies. According to Gary Kleck, Ph.D. a professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida State University in Tallahassee and author of "Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America" conducted a survey by random telephone sampling of 4,978 households in all the states except Alaska and Hawaii. Results indicating that American civilians use their firearms as often as 2.5 million times every year defending against a confrontation with a criminal, and that handguns alone account for up to 1.9 million defenses per year. My family and I had a personal experience with a home invasion. It was a normal Wednesday night; I was finishing up some late night studies while I heard something from down stairs. Someone had decided to rob our house. I went to my parent’s room to tell them about the intruder. My dad went and unlocked his gun safe and pulled out his twelve gauge shotgun. He exited the room with a loud pump of the forestock. The intruder was quick to run out the door after hearing this. We never had to fire a shot and our guns saved…
In the story The Kugelmass Episode, Woody Allen takes the reader on an exciting journey through time and literature that keeps you begging for more. Professor Kugelmass is a middle-aged teacher at City College in New York City. He seems to be unfulfilled and bored with his life as a whole. The real world is far too drab for his liking and so he sets out to change his life but ultimately ends up turning his world upside down. Allen uses colorful dialogue to first disconnect the reader from the main character, bring irony and humor to the story, and use that humor to teach the reader a thing or two about being satisfied and happy with what you have.…
