This part of the movie shown the Extrinsic Motivation. Extrinsic motivation refers to a person’s tendency to perform a task, research suggests that by overloading with rewards can reflect in poor performance, causing a decrease in intrinsic motivation. In the movie, Coach carter had each member to sign the contract. In the contract, it states that they should attend all of their classes, wear dress shirts and ties on game days, refer to everyone (players and coach alike) as "sir", and maintain a minimum 2.3 (C+) grade point average, Ken Carter used a variety of ways to lead and motivate the team to get them on their way to the state championships undefeated. among other requirements. Carter also asks the school staff for progress reports on the players' grades and attendance. He teaches them to play a disciplined brand of basketball. Including, those countless push-ups and suicides the team members had to make in order to come back again to the team. This is a sample of Extrinsic Motivation. They are not really interested in the activity for its own sake; they only care about the game, which is basketball. Intrinsic motivation comes from within an individual. At the latter part of the movie, Coach Carter chooses to quit his job, but soon he reconsidered when he realized that he truly did inspire and change the lives of the athletes at Richmond High. The athletes refused to play, until their academic grades improved, and only then did the team get back on the court and make their way to the state championships. They didn't win the championships, they fell short in the first round, but they did win the hearts of the Richmond community and 6 of the athletes went on to college of which 5 won scholarships. When we are intrinsically motivated, we do not need incentives or punishments, because the activity itself is satisfying and rewarding. It is an objects or events that encourages or discourages
