The Face in the Mirror Was Not Mine
“The face in the mirror was not mine! What was going on?” Andrea thought. Now let me explain to you how this all happened…
Andrea’s morning started off like every other day. School went well, and the evenings with her mom, dad and 2 older sisters followed the same routine as every other Thursday night.
“Tonight everything is going to change for me. At 11:11 pm my biggest dream will finally come true,” Andrea thought as her wise father rambled on about what a colleague had said at lunch time. Her mother had noticed that she was being oddly quiet, and said to her: “Darling, you’ve barely touched you’re food.” Andrea replied to her that she was going through the lessons she had learned at school today.
Later on that very same night Andrea looked on her wall-clock with the French-styled twirls and saw that it was only 10:11 pm. So she decided to revise her wish: “I wish that my inner beauty would shine out onto my body and face.” The reason for this specifically detailed wish was the fact that Andrea had never been particularly pretty, and they always say “Inner beauty shows on the inside and outside”. So Andrea always believed that her inner beauty, when brought out, would outshine her looks on the outside because she was always friendly and helpful and never complained about anything.
As Andrea went on mumbling and thinking about this over and over, she had not noticed that it was already 11:05 pm. Luckily she had set an alarm on her phone earlier on for seven minutes past eleven.
So as the time drew nearer Andrea embraced herself for what might or might not happen. As soon as her clock showed 11:11 pm, Andrea made her wish. She suddenly felt a tingle on her spine, and after that her whole, entire body started to ache and her entire felt like she was burning. Her terrible screams woke the entire household and they rushed into her room, only to find that there was a strange, odd-looking creature on their daughters’ bedroom floor. Andrea then started speaking

3:15 am, I lie in the spot of my bed I’d always gone to for comfort, now lying there unable to move, think, breathe, sleep, trying to wrap my mind around the fact that my world would never be the same again. Randomly waking up in the early hours of the morning is something I rarely do, so waking up at 3:06 am looking around my room, seeing Kierra also happen to wake up wasn’t right. Looking over at my phone, seeing Mrs. Jennie was calling me, I hesitantly answered, unsure of what to expect. Still half asleep, I asked, “Hello?”. Is everything okay?”…

When Zilia sees her reflection in the mirror for the first time she is astonished and surprised by it. She sees herself and mistakes herself for the Virgin of the Sun. She is very transfixed on the image of herself and almost in a shock of never seeing herself. The mirror represents self reflection and is a very important item that she comes into contact with. When looking into the mirror she is able to see the physical differences between herself and the French and also is able to see the changes that have occurred to her throughout the journey of her capture. “These marvels disturb the mind and offend reason. What is one to think of this country’s inhabitants? Must one fear them? Must one love them? I shall be careful to reserve judgment in this matter” (Gaffigny 51). The mirror shows Zilia the advancement the French have on her people and she does not know whether she wants to embrace this or be frightened.…

Despite the mother’s countless efforts to oppress the need for change within the lives of her children, the narrator’s father seemed to have had the upper hand in the development of their children despite his limited efforts. An evidence of this can be witnessed in the occupation adopted by the narrator; as described by the line “I have to worry about being late and weather I have a clean shirt and weather my car will start and about all the other countless things one must worry about when he teaches at a great Midwestern university.” (Macleod 93) Portraying quite clearly that the narrator chose to pursue the path that his father had started him on. As opposed to the path that his mother had liked for him to have been on. Furthermore, proving that change is something that everyone adores, regardless of their age. And it was the father’s ability to accept that change within the lives of his children that allowed for him to have a greater impact upon their lives that their own mother.…

Carrie predicted, the same things happened to us everyday. Teachers acted like we weren’t there, students were friends with Lillian Jean, who disliked us very much, and Jeremy was the only person, other than Cassie and Mrs. Carrie, who would talk to me. The only good thing about this was that we get the cafeteria to ourselves, but it didn’t do much as we were refused the right to be served food by the cafeteria ladies. The next day, we had to stay home and take care of Mama because she got a cold. One thing I knew for sure is that we were not missing school. What we didn’t know then was that the day at school went different for every student and teacher since we weren’t there. Unfortunately for us, Mama felt better the next day and we were no longer needed in the house, so we were sent back to school. “I’m riding the bus today, no matter what anyone says. I’m too tired to walk the whole couple of miles,” complained Cassie as she started towards the bus stop. I didn’t want her to get in trouble, but I was also worn from last night where we had to cook supper, put Mama to bed, and put ourselves to…

The themes of this short story include jealousy, obsession with narcissism and the emergence of another identity. In this short story, jealousy is displayed when Monica has the narrator choose between the real her and the Monica in the mirror. In the story, “Once, she said, “You know, sometimes I think you like me better there”—she pointed to a mirror—“than here”—she pointed to herself. She said it teasingly, with a little laugh, but in her look was an anxious question.” The Monica in the mirror was described in this excerpt: “a fresh Monica, a vibrant Monica, a Monica with a glow of pleasure in her face. She was dressed in clothes that no longer seemed a little drab, a little elderly, but were handsomely understated, seductively restrained.” The real Monica is depicted in the excerpt “Not for a moment did the mirror make her look young, or beautiful, for she was not young and she was not beautiful. But it was as if some inner constriction had dissolved, some sense of her drifting gradually into unhappiness.” Jealousy is what drove the…
