The Failure Of The Cyclone Racer
On September 15, 1968, the Cyclone Racer rolled to an end. Over 25 million passengers from all over the world had ridden the four-car Cyclone Racer, thrilled by the mile-long ride and by a slow 90 degree ascent to a peak of 100 feet and a hair-raising drop at speeds up to 55 miles per hour. The deaths reported here were caused by people who did not heed the words of the operator. They did not hold tight and they did stand up. There was only one recorded mechanical failure through the years and that accident did not cause any fatalities. In operation since May 30, 1930, the iconic Long Beach attraction was torn down to make room for the Magnolia Street Bridge. It took four months to reduce it to a pile of rubble. Planners speculated the Cyclone

It was moved to a second, temporary site until a permanent site could be blessed by Padre Sierra. That temporary mission was destroyed in the earthquake of 1818, and it was moved to yet another temporary site. Construction began on the fourth church in 1822. It…

How many people have to die, or sustain serious injury from amusement park rides before the federal government steps in and regulates the amusement park industry? Rosy Esparza’s family had every right to believe that she would return from the Texas Giant roller coaster without harm or injury. However, Esparza fell to her death on the Texas Giant roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas. Incidents like this are sadly becoming a more common event in the United States at amusement and waterparks. In fact, the number of fatalities per passenger mile on roller coasters is greater than the amount of tragedies on passenger trains, passenger buses, or passenger planes. These tragedies often occur because the rides are not independently inspected, inspections are not done frequently enough, accidents are not made public and the accidents are investigated by the parks. The federal government needs to create national safety standards for all rides at amusement parks, so that every amusement park patron can enjoy the park as it is intended without fear of injury or death.…

A rubber band racer consists of a corflute base, a rear axle with rubber wheels and a front axle with plastic wheels. It is powered by a rubber band that can be wound around the rear axle and when released it propels the racer forwards. When the rubber band is wound around the axle it has elastic potential energy and when this energy is release it is transformed into kinetic energy that rotates the rear axle and wheels propelling the car forwards. As the car rolls it loses energy but as “The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, just transformed from one form to another.” This energy has to go somewhere. In this case it is lost through friction between…

There it was, The Goliath. One of the world’s tallest roller coasters standing at over 200 feet tall, sitting right in front of this little 12-year-old boy waiting in line at Six Flags to ride his first roller coaster. That little boy was me and this was the moment I overcame my fear of riding a roller coaster. As I was waiting in line under the hot sun for my turn on the gigantic roller coaster I was contemplating in my head if I should turn back or not. I said to myself that I’m not going to give up and I am going to conquer my fear today no matter what. The line was moving pretty quickly and as I got closer and closer to the roller coaster my urge to turn back grew stronger. As the next batch of people got off the roller coaster I realize it’s my turn to get on, so the attendant tells everyone…

"AHHHHHHH!" I screamed as the roller coaster began climbing up the steep hill. In what seemed to be an eternity the rollercoaster made it only halfway to the top. Looking down below at the pool area I saw people which seemed like ants. Click, Click, Click the roller coaster continues to the top.My heart starts beating faster, my hands and whole body starts to shake and sweat; at this point I know what's coming, I didn’t know whether to hold my breath or to breathe deeply; I panic as I look for something nice, steady and strong to hold me and keep me safe from the fall of death.…

It was a hot July day in California the flies were thicker than Midwest humidity. I was suited up in a full bodied fire retardant jump suit, gloves, race shoes, neck roll and a helmet, happier than a five year old’s Christmas morning. As the sweat dripped down my back and the sun beat on the top of my helmet making the top of my head feel like it was going to catch fire. By this point my smile was the size of Texas. The crowd bustled around and cheered for the preliminary races, the music blasted between the commentator’s recaps and I stood proudly outside of the door of my race car, my purple and white ole’ number 77. Two hundred and twenty-two hours of determination and fantasizing about this very day, my first race.…

While wondering around for a bit, waiting for the food to digest, I stumbled onto my favorite ride, the Zipper. The ride shook with each person that stepped on the old metal cages. Once I heard the loud siren go off, I grabbed tighter onto the metal bar and closed my eyes knowing that it was going to get wild. After the first spin there was not a better feeling I could have experienced, with the death screams of the other riders and whooshing wind in my ears, I felt thrilled. After the…
